Real Madrid star’s London trip changes everything
After travelling to the U.K. for treatment on his troublesome knee, Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger has a new lease of life.
Something has finally shifted in Antonio Rüdiger’s physical condition, and it’s opened an entirely new horizon for him at Real Madrid - and for this late stage of his career. The center‑back underwent a knee procedure in late January at a London clinic, and it has worked. The fluid buildup that caused him recurring pain and swelling after every match has disappeared. And Rüdiger is regaining his best sensations, even when measured by performance metrics.
His personal performance team has recorded top speeds of 19 mph in recent matches, gradually inching back toward his typical 20-21 mph range. The German defender is once again trusting his body.
Rüdiger decided to travel to London for treatment following recommendations from several fellow professionals who had gone there to address similar knee issues. He believed that the period right after the Spanish Super Cup was the ideal moment to undergo the procedure - just a quick one‑day trip to receive injections, followed by a mandatory two‑week period of total rest.
He reached that point after pushing himself to play in the Club World Cup and realizing he could no longer continue with such persistent pain and instability. It was time to stop, reset, and make a smart decision that would allow him to be fully fit for the crucial stretch of the season - and for the World Cup. And he chose wisely.
His connection with Madrid head coach Álvaro Arbeloa is excellent. Arbeloa understands the stability Rüdiger brings to the back line and gave him full freedom to return only when he felt 100% ready. Together, they built a strict recovery plan, which they followed almost perfectly - except for the last match against Elche, when Rüdiger had to step in unexpectedly due to Raúl Asencio’s sudden absence.
But the hard part is behind him. If things continue this way, his knee issues could truly be a thing of the past. The London treatment seems to have eliminated the troublesome fluid for good.
Standing tall in the squad
Real Madrid selected Rüdiger to speak ahead of the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Manchester City - a clear sign of the stature he currently holds within the squad. Naturally, several questions centered on his contract situation. His deal with Madrid expires in June this year. At 33, his future is uncertain, even more so considering the repeated knee problems he has endured.
Still, the German defender struck an optimistic tone. He noted that his health is his top priority, that he’s feeling good again, and that the rest would sort itself out. Discussions about his contract, he hinted, would come at the right time.
He was also asked directly whether renewal talks had already begun. AS understands that they have not - both the club and the player agree that everything depends on whether his physical problems remain under control, or at least stable enough to ensure reliable availability. For now, Rüdiger is happy, because that threshold seems to have been reached.
And he’s hoping it stays that way - because not only is his future at Real Madrid at stake, but also his role in the upcoming World Cup with Germany, where he serves as captain and a cornerstone of the squad.
When asked about potential discussions with the club, Rüdiger explained that he feels genuinely valued in Madrid, appreciates the respect he receives, but also must think rationally: staying healthy and fulfilling his responsibilities comes first. Still, he made it clear - he loves Real Madrid.
Everything now hinges on a meeting expected later in the season, once the club has had more time to assess the long‑term condition of his knee. Inside the club, everyone recognizes the effort Rüdiger has made to help the team.
A torturous stretch of pain
Last season, before undergoing arthroscopy, Rüdiger played through pain on a near‑constant basis. He had to take painkillers and anti‑inflammatory medication daily just to train. The breaking point came in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona, when his body simply gave out. Those images of him screaming in pain while listening to Carlo Ancelotti’s instructions spread around the world.
He later underwent arthroscopic surgery and rushed - perhaps too quickly - to return in time for the Club World Cup in the United States. This season, he has again been forced to push through physical problems due to the team’s lack of available defenders.
Rüdiger has received several offers from Saudi clubs - a path that, before the conflict in Iran escalated, might have been a tempting exit. But he turned every one of them down, because his true desire has always been to play a few more seasons for Real Madrid.
His future at the Bernabéu, however, remains unclear. Madrid is actively searching the market for a young center‑back with long‑term upside, and the club awaits the full recovery of Éder Militão. Asencio has proven to be a depth option in defense, and the club is keen on promoting Joan Martínez into that role as early as this summer.
On top of that, Madrid spent close to $60 million on Dean Huijsen, and is also monitoring the situation of Jacobo Ramón, who has excelled on loan at Como and could be brought back for roughly $12 million. In that overall picture, Rüdiger’s place is difficult to guarantee.
But that trip to London has given him a new lease on life - and the club knows it.
