Real Madrid target Schlotterbeck fuels speculation
The Dortmund defender set off fresh talk about his future after his celebration against Bayern.
Nico Schlotterbeck was once again at the center of attention in Borussia Dortmund’s 3-2 loss to Bayern Munich, not only for his performance but for a celebration that sparked speculation. After scoring the opening goal, the German center back flexed his biceps and then formed a heart with his hands, a gesture that quickly drew notice.
Lothar Matthäus, the German legend and Sky Germany analyst, interpreted the celebration as a possible sign of affection for the club, though Schlotterbeck’s future remains a topic of debate, particularly amid reported interest from Real Madrid.
Expectation is that Schlotterbeck will leave
The 26-year-old Germany international is under contract at Signal Iduna Park through 2027, and an extension does not appear imminent. “He knows what he has here,” said Matthäus, the most-capped player in German national team history, emphasizing Schlotterbeck’s importance to both the team and the club. However, he added that if a special offer were to arrive — such as one from Real Madrid — it would be understandable for the defender to consider taking the next step in his career. What is clear, meanwhile, is that Dortmund badly needs leaders of Schlotterbeck’s caliber.
The player once again showed in Germany’s biggest rivalry match his ability to influence games at both ends of the field, playing key roles defensively and offensively. After the final whistle, he remained composed in front of reporters and offered no clues about his future. Sporting director Sebastian Kehl said “there’s no decision yet,” confirming that negotiations remain ongoing and underscoring Schlotterbeck’s central role in Dortmund’s short- and long-term plans.
