Midweek games call for changes. Carlo Ancelotti is playing the long game regarding the management of his squad’s minutes, thinking about both the upcoming Copa del Rey final and the Champions League semi-final against Manchester City, the first leg of which will be played with less than 72 hours rest.

Benzema, Rodrygo and Camavinga did not train with the group this morning and everything points to Carletto resting for tomorrow’s game Tuesday against Girona. If this is the case, it would be the first match day in which the French left-back/midfielder has not been called up in the two seasons he has been at Madrid.

The injured Alaba and Mendy did not train, nor did Ceballos, who will complete the card cycle after seeing his fifth yellow of the season against Celta.

Benzema played in Real Madrid's last league match, a 2-0 win over Celta Vigo, but he will not feature against Girona.

The injuries, coupled with the decision to rest Benzema, Camavinga and Rodrygo, leave Ancelotti with 17 players from the first team. It is a perfect situation for Ancelotti to cheery pick the top performers from Castilla, thwith e second team, with the added advantage that a mid-week match does not interfere with Raúl’s plans. Five homegrown players participated in training: Vinicius Tobias, Arribas, Mario Martín, Álvaro Rodríguez and Nakai.

In the 2-0 win over Celta, Ancelotti made five changes to the starting XI compared to the side that sealed the club’s place in the Champions League semi finals against Chelsea. If the absences in the squad are confirmed by the coach in his press conference, there will be at least three changes in the eleven that Madrid put out in Montilivi compared to the one that beat Celta on Saturday at the Bernabéu.
