Real Madrid vs Manchester City: Six stars one yellow card away from missing crucial Champions League return clash
Several key Real Madrid and Manchester City players must avoid yellow cards at the Bernabéu to be available for the return leg in Manchester.
Real Madrid and Manchester City face off in the standout tie of the 2025-26 Champions League round of 16. The first leg takes place at the Bernabéu on Wednesday, March 11, with the return game at the Etihad scheduled for next Tuesday, March 17.
Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham will sit out the clash in Spain through injury but hope to be fit for the second leg. However, several players risk missing the decisive matchup in Manchester for an entirely different reason.
Yellow card rules causing problems in Champions League
Yellow card accumulation has become a major issue in this season’s Champions League. Players who receive three bookings are suspended for one game, and with more fixtures in the new league phase, eight instead of the previous format, the risk of suspension has increased significantly.
The first suspension is triggered after three yellow cards. From there, bans arrive in cycles of two additional bookings, five, seven, nine and so on.
There is one key reset. All yellow cards are wiped after the quarterfinals, meaning none carry over into the semifinals. But with the round of 16 only just beginning, that reset has not yet come into effect.
Vinicius among Real Madrid players walking suspension tightrope
Real Madrid are particularly at risk, with no fewer than six players just one yellow card away from incurring a one-game suspension. However, only three are realistically in danger of being forced to sit out the second leg against City.
Aurélien Tchouaméni, Dean Huijsen and, crucially, Vinicius Júnior are the trio who must avoid a booking in Wednesday’s first leg to be able to play in Manchester.
The other three players walking a suspension tightrope, Bellingham, Álvaro Carreras and Rodrygo, are unavailable for the first leg through injury. The England midfielder and the former Benfica fullback could be ready for action in Manchester, although the Brazilian forward is set for a long spell on the sidelines with an ACL tear.
Manchester City also have suspension concerns
Three City players must also tread carefully at the Bernabéu this week.
Pep Guardiola will be desperate for Marc Guéhi and Nico O’Reilly to avoid bookings to ensure he does not have a selection headache in defense for the second leg. Winger Savinho is also one yellow card away from a one-game ban, although he is a fitness doubt for Wednesday’s game.
