In their opening competitive fixture of 2024/25, Real Madrid have the opportunity to win the first of seven possible pieces of silverware this season, as the European champions take on Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup in Warsaw.

Having concluded their preseason preparations with a 2-1 friendly win over Chelsea in North Carolina, Madrid will now bid to begin the official campaign on the right foot - but the Spaniards face a tough test in the Polish capital. After all, Gian Pier Gasperini’s men qualified for today’s continental curtain-raiser by ending Bayer Leverkusen’s 51-game unbeaten run in May’s Europa League final.

Big Real Madrid names come in after missing tour

For today’s clash at Stadion Narodowy, however, Madrid will be able to call on a host of major stars who were unavailable to them during their recent summer tour of the United States. Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, Dani Carvajal, Aurélien Tchouameni, Ferland Mendy and marquee signing Kylian Mbappé are all in Madrid’s line-up against Atalanta, having joined Los Blancos’ preseason preparations following the squad’s return from America.

Eduardo Camavinga also reported for duty after Madrid’s arrival back in Spain, but he won’t be available to head coach Carlo Ancelotti today. The midfielder has been ruled out of the Super Cup after suffering a training-ground injury on Tuesday, hurting his foot in a challenge with Tchouaméni.

Mbappé set for Real Madrid debut

Having joined Madrid on a free transfer over the summer, culminating the club’s years-long pursuit of the striker, Mbappé will finally pull on the white shirt in Warsaw. The 25-year-old Frenchman arrives at the 15-time European champions having scored 44 goals and supplied 10 assists for Paris Saint-Germain last term.

Like Mbappé, Bellingham will make his first ever appearance in a UEFA Super Cup. The Englishman, who has now shaken off the shoulder issue that had been troubling him, was key to the Madrid forward line in his first season in Spain, plundering 23 goals and supplying 13 assists. Mbappé and Bellingham will be joined in attack by Vinícius Júnior, who was Madrid’s chief forward threat in the preseason clashes with Barcelona and Chelsea earlier this month. This year, Vinícius will look to outdo his 2023/24 tally of 24 goals and 11 assists.

If Madrid beat Atalanta today, midfield legend Luka Modric will become the most decorated player in the club’s history, with 27 trophies.
