Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid secured their ticket for the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey (Monday 8 January 12:30 p.m. ET / 9:30 a.m. PT.) after getting past Arandina: they now await their opponent in the next round. The draw is random, but the table means that Los Blancos can face any of the other 15 surviving teams in the next round.

That is to say, there could indeed be a Clásico or a Madrid derby. The draw will be held today, Monday, January 8, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. in Las Rozas and the tie will be played in a single match between the 16 and on the 18th of January.

Will Real Madrid play home or away?

The Copa del Rey regulations state that in the round of 16 the lower division teams will still face those from the top tier. But since more than eight first division teams have qualified (there will be 14 or 15, depending on whether Villarreal qualify), there inevitably have to be pairings between LaLiga EA Sports teams. That is the reason why Madrid can cross paths with any of the other 15 teams.

If Madrid’s ball is one of the first to come out, they will be able to face Tenerife or Unionistas if they qualify; if not, the current champion will face another Primera División team. If they were drawn against Tenerife or Unionistas, Madrid would play the tie away; if they are paired with another Primera División team, the match will be played at the home of the team that is drawn first.
