Thiago Pitarch is a gem. A rare one. Less promise with every passing day and more reality. More captivating each time you watch him.

Two hundred twenty-one days ago, Thiago celebrated his 18th birthday. Twenty-three days ago, he made his first-team debut, one minute at the Estádio da Luz after being called up 11 straight times without playing. And just one day ago, he was in the starting lineup for a Champions League knockout game for the first time.

What a night.

After so much anticipation and so little playing time, just 152 minutes with the senior squad spread across three weeks. But what a 152 minutes they have been. His rise felt inevitable. Meritocracy in action.

His performance against City was both a continuation and a turning point. He looked like many young prospects before him, but also like none of them. Without saying a word, he left everyone speechless. And his career is only beginning. More than a star has arrived. A superstar.

Arbeloa’s gamble pays off

On the eve of the match, coach Álvaro Arbeloa explained the difficulty of trusting youth at a club like Real Madrid.

“Here you have the best players in the world, and if you play a youth academy player, someone from the first team has to sit. That’s not easy for a Real Madrid coach,” he said. “But if I do it, it’s because I’m convinced.”

Simple and direct. In other words, trust the player who has earned it.

And once Arbeloa made that decision, he committed fully. Thiago not only started ahead of Eduardo Camavinga, he also shifted Arda Güler out wide. After two games drifting toward the left flank, the roles changed. Thiago took control in the middle while Güler moved to the wing.

In the middle of the storm, he looked completely at home. Because beyond the skill, he carries something else that cannot be taught. Personality.

The numbers behind the performance

The stat line only reinforces the eye test.

Thiago completed 94 percent of his passes, 32 of 34 attempts. Nearly half of them, 16 passes, came in the attacking half. He also completed 100 percent of his long balls, two for two.

But numbers alone do not capture the full picture.

He dropped deep to help build attacks, dribbled past opponents to move the ball forward, and arrived in the box to support the final pass. Calm under pressure. Composed in the chaos.

His commitment without the ball was just as striking. The crowd at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium erupted in the 50th minute when he sprinted back the length of the field to win possession.

Even his first mistake drew applause. A miscue inside the area was rescued by another miraculous save from Thibaut Courtois. Every great player earns a scar or two.

A record-breaking night

Thiago’s night ended in the 76th minute. As he walked off, the stadium rose to its feet.

“Thiago, Thiago, Thiago.”

The chant echoed through the Bernabéu as the exhausted teenager took his seat on the bench after a massive effort and a stunning performance.

The moment also placed him in the club’s history books. At 18 years and 220 days, he became the youngest Spanish player ever to start a Champions League knockout match for Real Madrid, breaking the record previously held by Raúl González.

Not bad company to keep.

Spain calling

Right now, the lineup almost feels like “Thiago and ten others.”

And based on what he showed, his best position is clearly central, not drifting out to the left wing.

He has proven he can handle minutes with Real Madrid. He can handle LaLiga. And now he has shown he can start on the biggest nights in European soccer.

Next up could be international recognition.

Spain’s under-21 squad announcement arrives March 20 ahead of two European qualifying matches. His call-up now feels almost inevitable. Thiago has already played six matches with Spain’s under-20 team and one with the under-19s.

Technically, he could still represent Morocco. But that decision appears settled. Spain is his choice.

There is no debate anymore. Only amazement. Because Thiago is dazzling. And when players like this emerge, it often signals the beginning of something enormous.

A superstar has been born.
