Thibaut Courtois makes history, becoming the first keeper to record two assists in Champions League season
Thibaut Courtois played a ball to Fede Valverde from his own area and the Uruguayan buried the goal to give Real Madrid a 1-0 lead against Manchester City.
It never comes as much of a surprise when Thibaut Courtois makes headlines on a Champions League night, but the Real Madrid keeper made history on Wednesday night becoming the first keeper to provide two assists in a Champions League season.
Another bit of history for Courtois
Courtois already had a couple assists to his resumé before the first leg of the round of 16 match against Manchester City. His first came with Chelsea in a 2017 match against Qarabag, and he had one earlier this year on a visit to Kairat Almaty. The later assist, that was finished off by Kylian Mbappe in a 5-0 away win, put him in the history books as the only keeper to have multiple assists in the Champions League.

He doubled his European tally with a fantastic ball from the back that was touched into space by Fede Valverde and two touches later it was in the back of the net. The assist against Pep Guardiola’s men on Wednesday night makes that his second assist during this Champions League campaign.
The goal was the first of three first half goals scored by the Real Madrid captain against City. Now Courtois will be tasked with protecting the 3-0 lead that Los Blancos carried into the first leg halftime break for the rest of the tie.
