Real Mallorca 1-1 Real Madrid

Ferland Mendy's late red card capped a disappointing night for Real Madrid in Mallorca and Carlo Ancelotti will be concerned with how his side faded in the second half of the action.

Things looked so good for the visitors as Rodrygo fired home with the first effort on Mallorca's goal to snuff out any early exuberance from the home side.

Mbappé was full of running but failed to create anything on what was, ultimately a frustrating league debut in LaLiga for the French striker.

The interval seemed to revive Mallorca and Arrasate's men came out of the blocks flying. Dani Rodriguez looked busy and both new signings Asano and Mojica looked like a shrewd bit of business for Los Bermellones.

The equaliser came from a Muriqi header and lead to a sustained spell of dominance from Mallorca with Antonio Sanchez wasteful late on to possibly sneak a winner from the home side.

Madrid did create chances but Greif was level to everything that was thrown at him.

With the game deep in time added on, Ferland Mendy lunged at Muriqi and was immedtaye awarded a straight red for the foul and will miss Madrid's home tie next weeked against Valladolid.

A fair result but one or two concerns for Ancelotti to consider.

as.com

Mallorca fans celebrate the point and worrying for Ancelotti how his side ran out of steam in the second half.

That's the final action as the whistle sounds.

A fair result on the balance of play.

as.com

Poor, poor challenge from the Frenchman who takes Muriqi out with a reckless lunge.

as.com

Mendy red carded for a lunge on Muriqi.

as.com

Mallorca are next in action in Pamplona next weekend with Madrid at home to Real Valladolid on Saturday.

The ball falls to Modric and the Croatian strikes on the half volley but drives the ball well over Dominik Greif's crossbar.

as.com
92

Mallorca ending the game on top with Mojica still full of running as Copete comes on for Mascarell.

as.com

Is there a late twist to this game?

To be fair, a point would be a fair result with Madrid the better side in the first half and the home side on top in the second 45'.

as.com

Five minutes to be added.

as.com
90

Mallorca get another chance and Sanchez is guilty once again as the sub gets under the ball and blazes over.

as.com

Vini, Bellingham and Carvajal all leave the park

Guler, Vazquez, Brahim all on for Real Madrid

as.com
87

Mallorca almost nick a goal following good work from Larin ..the ball falls to Sanchez and he fails to secure a clean strike on the ball.

as.com
85

Five minutes remain at Son Moix.

as.com

Ancelotti set to make a final trio of subs.

as.com
83

Mallorca sit deep and allow Real Madrid enjoy sustained spells of possession.

This is when the side from the capital can be at their most dangerous and a risky tactic from Arrasate.

as.com
80

We move into the final ten minutes of the contest.

Madrid have failed to hit the heights of the team that were so impressive in the first half.

A discreet second half showing from Ancelotti's men with just that shot on target from Mbappe which was stopped by Greif's feet.

as.com

All square at Son Moix

Just over ten minutes on the clock in Palma.

as.com

Cooling break #2 coming up

as.com
75

Mojica's deliveries have been excellent as Mallorca win a corner thanks to the Colombian's boots.

Mojica nos shoots from distance but blazes well over.

as.com

Asano and Darder make way

Larin and Morlanes on for Mallorca

as.com
70

Twenty minutes of the contest remain and at this juncture, it's difficult to see who gets the win here at Son Moix.

Mbappe almost finds the net as Grief stops and Rodrygo is a second too slow as Mojica clears.

as.com
68

Samu Costa has a go from distance but his 'daily-cutter' goes wide and fails to trouble Courtois.

Tiredness creeping into the game now as the heat takes its toll.

Madrid also could claim that they were involved in a Super Cup last Wednesday in Warsaw.

as.com

Change for Mallorca as Antonio Sanchez comes on for Dani.

as.com
62

Mbappe shoots and forces a fine save from Greif.

The dynamic of the game starting to slowly shift as Modric comes on for Tchouameni.

as.com
61

Bellingham robs the ball and feed Vinicius but the Brazilian drifts his effort high and over the bar as we see Modric getting ready to enter the action.

as.com

Asano and Mojica have been excellent tonight for Mallorca.

Los Bermellones the side on top as we approach the hour mark.

as.com
56

Muriqi heads again from a Mojica delivery bit this time the ball is straight at the Belgian keeper.

The Mallorca fans are fired up by the Muriqi goal and doing their bit to push the team along.

as.com

Fine header from Muriqi but you have to question the defending as the striker rose unchallenged to nod home from the Dani Rodriguez corner.

Courtois could do little about the powerful header from the Mallorca No. 7.

as.com
as.com
52

Mallorca corner.

The ball is driven into the net and Muriqi heads the home side level.

as.com
48

So what of Mbappé so far?

Well, it's been a discreet showing to date from the French star who has just that one shot into the side netting to show for himself after almost 50 minutes of action.

as.com

All set for the restart.

Madrid get the half underway.

as.com

Mallorca need more from Muriqi, the former Lazio striker has been doing a solid job in holding up the ball but is not creating the positions needed to hurt Madrid.

More of the same from Real Madrid who have been impressive in the first 45 as the teams return to the pitch at Son Moix.

as.com

Madrid in control at the interval

Plenty of work for Real Mallorca ahead in the second half.

as.com
as.com

The whistle sounds to bring the half to an end.

Madrid the better side and very much in control following Rodrygo's fine 13th minute strike.

Mallorca just lacking that added quality and composure needed to take the test to Real Madrid but all to play for at San Moix in the second half.

as.com

The card is out and it's for Mallorca's Maffeo... Arrasate booked too for complaining.

as.com
45

We'll have an additional 3 minutes of time added on.

as.com
42

Courtois spills the ball and needs Rudiger to whack the ball away from the danger zone. Better past five minutes or so from Mallorca.

as.com
41

Asano has impressed on his Liga debut for Mallorca but that early self belief we saw from the home side really was extinguished through Rodrygo's strike in the 13th minute.

as.com
37

Madrid go close as Grief gets a touch on the ball to deny Mbappé.

Vinicius seems to be enjoying himself now.

Down the other end Dani heads over but that was a decent half-chance for the home side.

as.com
35

Just the one shot on target from Mallorca and the Madrid back four looks very comfortable in dealing with what Mallorca have to throw at them.

as.com

Cooling break with 30 minutes on the clock !

as.com
27

Corner for Mallorca and the ball drifts across the goal mouth once agian with no player in a red jersey on hand to latch onto the ball.

as.com

Real Mallorca are far too wasteful when they do manage to break forward.

Mbappé gets free and drives the ball into the side netting,

The goal really has dented Mallorca's confidence level and you fear for the islanders should Madrid double their advantage.

as.com

Possession after 20'

Mallorca 46-54 Real Madrid (%)

as.com

Rudiger has a pop from distance and the ball goes inches wide ...

Los Blancos looking composed and very much in control.

as.com
18

Decent ball from Mallorca from the left hand flank but Muriqi fails to connect .

The ball breaks down the other side of the pitch and Rodrygo fires on target and it needs a fine save from Greif.

Madrid playing with plenty of confidence now.

as.com

Madrid go ahead in Mallorca

as.com
as.com

Rodrygo fires home with a lovely touch from vini Jr.

Great strike from the Brazilian.

as.com
13

Madrid now enjoying ore sustained spells of possession with a series of boos rining out every time Vini Jr. comes into contact with the ball.

as.com
9

First corner of the evening for Madrid and it appears that the playing surface is somewhat dry and seems to be breaking up easily.

Madrid earn a second corner.

as.com

Despite the heat, Jude Bellingham still wearing his characteristic long sleeve jersey !

as.com
6

Mbappé picks up the ball and proved a wonderful sprint down field with Maffeo giving chase.

Vilni Jr. was free and a square ball from the French striker would have been a better option.

as.com
5

Mallorca go close as Dani strikes but the ball drifts wide of Courtois' post.

Solid showing to date from Los Bermellones.

as.com
4

Slow paced start to the action with a series of stoppages spoiling the rhythm.

Mallorca enjoying the bulk of early possession so far.

as.com
1

Early corner for Mallorca.

But before it can be taken Militao seems to be in trouble.

We're good to go ... the Brazilian is back on his feet and Courtois the ball away from the danger zone.

as.com

All set in Son Moix... Soto Grado sounds the whistle and off we go...

Mallorca start the game.

as.com

Thee teams are on the pitch... one or two white jerseys dotted around the packed house with red and black the predominant colour among the 23,000 fans in the sold-out San Moix.

as.com

All set in San Moix.

Both teams are in the tunnel. Reigning champions Madrid against the side who finished 15th.

Mbappé looking anxious in the tunnel with all the assembled media focused on the French striker.

as.com

A reminder of tonight's starting XI's for those late arrivals.

Mbappé starts for Madrid and forms part of an attacking trio with Brazilian pair Rodrygo and Vini Jr.

Muriqi and Asano to lead the line for the home side.

as.com

Nadal shows up at Son Moix

Local lad Rafa Nadal is one of the VIP's at Son Moix tonight but despite the tennis star hailing from Manacor he is a die-hard Madridista and will be cheering for Los Blancos tonight.

Nadal is joined by former Mallorca striker Aritz Aduriz who really made his name in LaLiga with Ahtletic Club.

as.com

So, with less than 30 minutes to go, how do we see tonight's game going?

Son Moix has been far from an easy ground for Madrid in recent years with Los Blancos recording two wins and two defeats on their last trips to face the islanders.

Muriqi will provide an handful for the Madrid rearguard and although Ancelotti's side may ship a goal, with a strikeforce that includes Rodrygo, Vini Jr and of course Mbappé, one has to think that the reigning champions will be making the trip back to the capital with 3 points as part of their hand luggage.

And all with a different player opening the scoring: Benzema in Mendizorroza, Lucas Vázquez in the Power Horse Stadium and Rodrygo in San Mamés.

Mallorca impressive in pre-season

With a similar squad from the 23-24 campaign but now being coached by Arrasate, Mallorca will be no pushovers tonight and indeed looked impressive in their pre-season campaign where they were unbeaten in their six games and only shipped two goals in these matches.

as.com

Madrid gunning for back-to-back titles

Real Madrid's current record of three titles in five seasons is their most successful run since 1986-1990, when they won the league four years in a row. Before Ancelotti’s return to the club in 2021, they had won LaLiga just twice in nine years, while Cristiano Ronaldo, despite scoring 311 goals in 292 league appearances for Real Madrid between 2009 and 2018, only lifted the LaLiga trophy on two occasions.

If Los Blancos are successful in winning the domestic championship for the second season in succession, it will be the first time they have achieved the feat in 17 years.
