Reports in Spain suggest that FC Barcelona are keeping tabs on Feyenoord and Mexico striker Santiago Giménez.

The 22-year-old forward has been in fine form in front of goal since the start of the season and has seen many top clubs across Europe linked with a move for the player, including arch-rivals Real Madrid.

Now, Barcelona-based news outlet SPORT says that the Catalan club, who are the current holders of the LaLiga title but recently lost El Clásico to two Bellingham goals, could indeed be tempted into a move for the player, but they would have to wait until the summer to see how things look.

It is expected that the club will bring in Vitor Roque during the upcoming transfer market and a move for Giménez would therefore be extremely unlikely before the current season is out, especially given the delicate financial situation in which the club finds itself.

Barcelona do not have Giménez as their priority

Santiago Giménez has been a revelation this season in the Eredivisie, scoring 13 goals in 10 games, as well as grabbing three assists. However, according to the report from the Catalan media outlet, despite his scintillating form for Feyenoord, Santiago Giménez is not the priority for Barcelona who are guided by their sporting director, Deco.

The former Portugal midfielder is said to be keen on recruiting in other positions for Barcelona and that a striker does not top the list of priorities, despite Robert Lewandowski being 35-years-old and practically the only player in the current squad with no natural replacement. Instead, the focus is said to be aimed towards a creative midfielder, which could mean that any potential interest in Giménez may be turned down until other roles and squad-building targets are met.

Could Santi Giménez move clubs in summer?

As mentioned, plenty of teams have been said to be keeping an eye on the forward who has scored for fun for Feyenoord. Real Madrid recently emerged as a club who are thought to be tracking the striker. Questions even came in for Giménez regarding a potential move to the 14-time European champions to which he said that “of course [I would like to join], they are a big club, of course.

However, the player came out recently and dispelled the rumours that he was set to join either Real Madrid or Tottenham Hotspur. Claims were made by his FIFA intermediary Morris Pagniello, who said that the forward was going to sign for one of the two teams. “In the last few hours”, he wrote on X (formerly Twitter), ”statements have come out about my future that have emerged from sources far from those close to me. Given this situation, I would like to clarify that I do not have a representative and that the person in charge of my career is my father with the help of Mariel. It is important not to take into account claims that have not been made by them or by me. I am very grateful for the understanding and support that everyone shows me every day. We have always been very open with information and know that as soon as there is any news to give, we will gladly let you know.”
