If you’re familiar with the popular sci-fi show, Doctor Who, you’ll know that the main protagonist is a time-travelling space alien from the planet Gallifrey that does not die at the end of their life cycle, instead ‘regenerating’ into another form altogether, allowing them to live on. It was a marvellous solution to the problem of the original actor, William Hartnell, getting too old for the role. back in the 1960s.

My question is: has Kylian Mbappé regenerated? Or is this the same player we’re seeing linked with Real Madrid again after he said no to them a thousand times before in the past? Haven’t Real Madrid worked out that the show needs to move on?

Mbappé rejected Real Madrid before

Kylian Mbappé might be an alien, but not one that regenerates into a different being at the end of his life. He is very good at kicking a football, but it is still the person that rejected Madrid, the club that positions themselves at the top of the world tree, in a fabulous piece of turncoat-ery last summer.

The PSG star chose to sign a new contract in a shock move that reportedly saw him earn astronomical wages and have a say in certain things that normal players in normal world wouldn’t get a chance to.

Reports suggest Madrid is still Mbappé's dream move

According to The Athletic, “PSG are aware that Mbappe has by no means forgotten his dream of playing for Real Madrid and there has been tensions at times between club and player”, which highlights the player’s childhood desire that he has never shyed away from making public, of playing in Spain for Los Blancos.

The report, from journalist Mario Cortegana, goes on to mention a quote from an anonymous source, in which they indicate that “the only club that can get him out of here is Real Madrid.”

Mbappé during the 2022-23 season

Everyone knows that when France really needed him, Mbappé showed up, scoring 3 goals in the World Cup final against Argentina. He was the star of the France side but for PSG, things have slowly been on the downward turn. The club signed Luis Campos, the man described as the football father of Mbappé, in the summer as Sporting Director, as well as Christophe Galtier, a manager seen as somebody who Mbappé could get along with.

But things haven’t gone smoothly in recent weeks. With the World Cup seemingly having taken its toll on the French side’s squad, Mbappé was left out of the recent defeat to Rennes, a game in which Leo Messi played 90 minutes and failed to contribute in any meaningful way. PSG are top of Ligue 1 but Lens are only 3 points behind and Marseille just one point behind that, meaning that the top names in the squad have to perform if they are to guarantee another league title for themselves this year.
