Rodrigo de Paul confirms Lionel Messi’s injury

Despite a brawl between Argentina supporters and Brazilian police prior to the match between Brazil and Argentina at the Maracana, the world champions emerged victorious and ended Brazil’s unbeaten home run in World Cup qualifiers.

Captain Lionel Messi played 78 minutes of the match, but during the first half he approached the dugout, as he was constantly touching his leg, and the alarm bells went off.

After the conflict in the stands, Messi behaved like a true captain, as he told the referee that they would not play until the situation was under control and so La Albiceleste went to the dressing room so that things could be resolved.

Otamendi goal

The game ended 1-0 in Argentina’s favour after Nicolás Otamendi rose highest to head the ball into the back of the net from Giovani Lo Celso’s corner.

“This team continues to make history. Great victory at the Maracana although it will be marked by the repression of Argentines once again in Brazil. This can’t be tolerated, it’s madness and it has to stop now,” Messi posted on his Instagram account.

Was Messi injured?

Under the post Messi uploaded, Argentina midfielder Rodrigo de Paul said, “You stood up for the people, and injured, played for us. Thanks captain.”

Argentina lead the Conmebol standings with 15 points, while Brazil are in sixth place with just seven points.
