In 1960, the Democratic Republic of the Congo threw off 52 years of official Belgian colonial rule to claim its independence. The path to sovereignty began a year earlier when Patrice Lumumba launched a sweeping independence movement. Following the country’s first free elections in 1959, Lumumba’s Mouvement National Congolais emerged victorious, cementing his place as the first prime minister in the nation’s history.

Lumumba’s appointment, which took effect in mid-1960, faced immediate backlash from Belgian authorities, their local Congolese allies, and political rivals, who quickly conspired to remove him. On September 5, 1960, he was stripped of power and arrested.

His subsequent execution by a firing squad in January 1961 plunged the Democratic Republic of the Congo into a prolonged era of political upheaval. This period of instability lasted until November 1965, when Army Chief Joseph-Désiré Mobutu seized absolute control of the country, initiating a decades-long dictatorship.

The Living Statue: Michel Kuka Mboladinga’s Silent Tribute to a Hero

For the past 13 years, Michel Kuka Mboladinga has grown into a legendary fixture of Congolese soccer by doing the unthinkable during national team matches: standing completely frozen. His stoic, 90-minute vigils are a direct homage to Patrice Lumumba, the revolutionary leader who secured the country’s independence from Belgium.

Mboladinga draws his inspiration from the iconic monument of Lumumba that stands in the heart of Kinshasa. Copying the landmark’s exact posture, he remains entirely motionless for the duration of every game—refusing to sing, chant, or move a single muscle—transforming a standard soccer match into a profound act of historical remembrance.
