Rüdiger and Guardiola clash in heated postgame moment after Real Madrid knock out Man City
Arbeloa intervened as a tense postgame handshake between Rüdiger and Guardiola turned dramatic on the field.

If you add Antonio Rüdiger to an already volatile Champions League equation that includes Pep Guardiola, a knockout clash between Manchester City and Real Madrid, the result is almost guaranteed tension.
That was on full display at the Etihad.
Guardiola made his way down the line greeting Madrid players one by one, exchanging quick handshakes with the likes of Eduardo Camavinga, Dean Huijsen and Federico Valverde. Then he reached Rüdiger.
A handshake that turned into something more
What started as a routine handshake quickly escalated. The two locked hands a little longer than expected, and what initially looked lighthearted suddenly teetered on the edge of confrontation.
Pep congratulating all Real Madrid players, it gets to Rudiger’s turn and see what happens 😭

Nathan Aké stepped in to separate them, while Álvaro Arbeloa ushered Rüdiger away. As the German defender walked off, Guardiola appeared to blow him a kiss, adding a final, theatrical touch to the exchange.
It was just one flashpoint in a matchup that continues to deliver drama year after year.
A modern Champions League rivalry
This fixture has quietly become one of the defining rivalries of recent European soccer. Over the past five seasons, Madrid and City have crossed paths repeatedly in the Champions League, producing high-stakes games and unforgettable moments.
More often than not, the edge has gone to the Spanish giants. Madrid have now come out on top in five knockout ties during that span, while City have managed two elimination wins, along with a victory in the league phase of the 2025-26 campaign.
Vinícius leads Madrid through again
The latest chapter followed a familiar script.
Vinícius Júnior scored twice at the Etihad to seal the win on the night and confirm Madrid’s progression, building on the 3-0 advantage they established at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Another statement victory for Madrid. Another frustrating exit for City. And now, another heated moment between two of the game’s biggest personalities to add to a rivalry that shows no signs of cooling down.
