Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney on brink of making footballing history with Wrexham

Easter Monday’s results saw the The Red Dragons move back into an automatic promotion position as they look to move to the second tier of the English pyramid.

Update:

The fate of Wrexham football started to change dramatically in November (2020) as the Hollywood duo of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney became the new owners of the football club from North Wales.

At the time, the Red Dragons were playing in the English National League or fifth tier of the pyramid system with growing debts crippling the club’s future.

With the assistance of directors Humphrey Kerr and Shaun Harvey, the Hollywood duo helped generate global interest in the affairs of Wexham which was boosted by the FK/Disney + “Welcome to Wrexham” documentary which showcased the trials and tribulations as the pair started to become more and more invested (financially and emotionally) with the club from the working class town in the north of Wales.

Affairs on the pitch also helped and despite falling at the final hurdle in their first season in charge in a playoff final, under the guidance of head coach Phil Parkinson and boosted with a sizeable playing budget, Wrexham secured two back-to-back promotions which saw them move to their current position in England’s League one (third tier).

Two games from glory

Wrexham have endured another rollercoaster season and heading into Monday’s Easter Monday fixtures, everything pointed to the Welsh club having to settle for the lottery of a playoff place with only two teams securing automatic promotion.

The top two teams automatically are promoted to the Championship (second tier) with teams finishing in 3rd-6th place competing for a final promotion place via a play-off system.

Birmingham City (partly owned by NFL legend Tom Brady) have already sealed top spot with Wycombe Wanderers leading Wrexham by one point going into Monday’s games.

Wrexham beat Blackpool away and inconceivably, Wycombe combusted, losing 0-4 at home to Charlton to give the initiative back to Wrexham with just two games outstanding in the season.

Incidentally, the Addicks could still bag an automatic promotion place themselves but would need both Wrexham and Wycombe to slip-up.

On the cusp of history

With the exception of a series of lower league English sides (Chester City, FC United of Manchester), no club in the top echelons of the English game has ever secured three back-to-back promotions and now Wrexham control their own destiny in the last two round of games.
