Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham is flying high in England’s League Two and well on its way to replicating last year’s promotion.
AFC Wrexham, the team owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, is once again making waves in English football with the Red Dragons on track for another dream season in League Two.
It’s worth remembering that in the 2022-23 English football campaign Wrexham achieved a historic promotion to League Two, marking their return to professional football, all of which hit the headlines worldwide thanks to the team’s famous owners and their stated desire to turn the Welsh side into a Premier League team in the future.
Wrexham flying high again
After last season’s success, Wrexham are in English soccer’s League Two (which is the fourth division, behind the Premier League, the Championship and League One), and the team is sitting pretty in second place as they aim for a second promotion in a row.
This weekend Wrexham beat Gillingham 2-0 in League Two, meaning the Red Dragons have racked up their ninth victory in 17 league games played and are sitting behind only leaders Stockport.
With the victory against Gillingham, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s team has now gone 11 consecutive games without defeat, leaving the fans dreaming again.
The top three teams at the end of season get automatic promotion to League One, while the teams from 4th to 7th place go into a play-off tournament for the final promotion spot.
Wrexham's road to the Premier League
When Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney acquired Wrexham in 2021, the actors set their sights on taking the club to the Premier League. The promotion last season to League Two was historic with the franchise having spent 15 years in the fifth tier of English football.
Now, as the second-placed team in League Two, Wrexham believes it has a serious chance of moving up to League One (third division) this season, although it’s worth noting there is still a long, long way to go. Wrexham have played 17 but have a futher 29 games to play, with each club playing 46 games per season.
If they reach League One, Wrexham will need to double their efforts to seek promotion to the Championship and from there, satisfy the dream of reaching the Premier League, a goal for which Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are working tirelessly, along with the occasional moment of fun.
