Some hugs say more than a thousand words. This was one of them. A hug full of emotion, packed with years of experiences, frozen in a single moment in the stands at the Santiago Bernabéu.

More than a thousand memories led to that embrace between Manuel Ángel and his father after the young midfielder made his Champions League debut against Manchester City.

Those memories stretch back to 2018, when a small-town prodigy left Albaida del Aljarafe, a village near Seville, and headed to Madrid to join Real Madrid’s academy. He was just 14 years old.

Leaving home was never going to be easy.

Not on the field. His talent quickly spoke for itself. Not socially either. He adapted quickly and fit in from the start.

But emotionally, the distance from home was tough. Frequent family visits and long video calls from his room helped bridge the gap. Years later, that hug in the Bernabéu stands made it all worth it.

Because of what it meant. Because of how it happened. Because of who shared the moment. And because of what might come next.

For Manuel Ángel, full name Manuel Ángel Morán Ibáñez but known to many simply as “Mami,” his moment may just be beginning.

Arbeloa has believed for years

“He’s one of my favorites,” former Real Madrid defender Álvaro Arbeloa said with a smile recently. “He won’t have any problem becoming an elite player.”

Arbeloa knows him better than most. The coach has guided Manuel Ángel for years through Real Madrid’s youth system, working with him at Juvenil A, then with Castilla, and now helping open the door to the first team.

And after his European debut, another milestone may be coming soon. Manuel Ángel is now a serious option to start in Real Madrid’s upcoming game against Elche. His performance recently turned heads after he won possession in midfield against Celta Vigo, starting the play that led to the decisive 2-1 goal. Against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, he entered in the 76th minute and showed a maturity well beyond his age.

Little by little, he is filling the role of creative brain in a Real Madrid side searching for midfield intelligence. Arbeloa has promoted two such players recently. Manuel Ángel may be the next to break through.

A summer full of interest

That breakthrough could easily have happened somewhere else. Last summer, several clubs shared Arbeloa’s belief that Manuel Ángel was already ready for top-level soccer. Teams from LaLiga and the middle tier of Spain’s second division expressed interest, and a loan move was seriously considered.

After two seasons serving as Raúl’s midfield leader at Castilla, the young playmaker felt ready for the next step. But Real Madrid had other plans.

The club wanted a strong Castilla squad capable of competing near the top of the table, and Manuel Ángel was central to that plan. Club officials pushed to keep their captain for one more season.

Arbeloa also asked for him to stay. Now the benefits are beginning to show.

A contract question on the horizon

His rise may soon force another conversation inside the club. Manuel Ángel last renewed his contract in 2023, with the deal running through 2027. That timeline means an important moment is approaching.

Beginning January 1 of the final contract year, players are allowed to negotiate with other clubs if their situation remains unchanged.

It is the kind of scenario Real Madrid, like any major club, prefers to avoid. Even more so when the player involved is considered one of the academy’s brightest prospects. Manuel Ángel certainly fits that description.

“Others with talent don’t run. He runs like an animal”

Marc Cucalón remembers it clearly. Manuel Ángel’s former academy teammate, whose own career ended tragically at age 19 after a rare bacterial infection in his knee following 796 days of recovery attempts, watched the midfielder’s development from the inside.

“We always said that from our generation, the one who would go the furthest was Manuel Ángel,” Cucalón told AS. “Even ahead of Nico Paz.”

The 2004 group at Real Madrid’s academy was stacked with talent, including players like Paz, Gonzalo García, César Palacios and Mario Martín.

“But if we had to bet money on one player, it was Manuel Ángel,” Cucalón recalled. “Everyone said it. Nico said it, the coaches said it. Everyone.”

Injuries slowed Manuel Ángel slightly last season, including a setback that forced him to miss the preseason tour in the United States.

“But honestly, for me he has even arrived a little late,” Cucalón said.

Endless energy in midfield

The two spent countless hours together, both on and off the field. They also shared midfield duties. Cucalón was often compared to Xabi Alonso, while Manuel Ángel provided relentless energy.

“He was always the first one defending,” Cucalón said. “Some players with quality don’t run. Manuel Ángel is the opposite. He has the most quality and he runs like an animal.

His performance in Vigo recently surprised many. Cucalón was not surprised at all. “Of course that’s how he plays,” he said. “I didn’t even need to win the ball back because he was already doing it higher up the field. Sometimes I got bored playing with him because he did everything.

Playing at double speed

At 5-foot-7, Manuel Ángel is not physically imposing. But Arbeloa has never viewed that as a problem. “The size he has is the size of his heart,” the coach once said.

Cucalón remembers their earliest sessions together. “Our first practices were incredible,” he said. “He was tiny, but unbelievably quick. It looked like he was playing everything at double speed.”

Those early sessions took place with Real Madrid’s Cadete B team, shortly after the club heard about a young prospect from Sevilla’s region who was “flying.”

Once he arrived at Valdebebas, he never slowed down. And according to people close to him, his choice of club was never in doubt. “It was Madrid, Madrid or Madrid.”

A truly two-footed player

Inside Real Madrid’s academy, his combination of intensity and skill quickly stood out.

“I don’t see a limit for him,” Cucalón said. “He fights for every ball like he’s crazy. Technically, the best I’ve seen along with Nico Paz.

Another trait that amazed teammates was his ability to play equally well with both feet.

“It was insane,” Cucalón said. “When he took penalties, he used both feet and you couldn’t tell the difference. Nobody knows which foot is his stronger one. Not even him.

Free kicks were the same. “Right foot or left foot, it looked identical. It made it so easy to play with him because he could receive the ball facing either direction.”

Treating every exam like a game

But Manuel Ángel’s story is not just about soccer.

“If I had to define him in one word, it would be family,” Cucalón said. “With teammates he’s always close, like he has known you forever. He’s a great guy, always attentive.”

He also stood out for his attitude in school. “He always had his head in the right place,” Cucalón said. “He always wanted to study. For him, every exam was like a match.”

After passing Spain’s university entrance exams, Manuel Ángel began studying sports nutrition and dietary supplementation.

The hug that meant everything

Behind that emotional moment in the Bernabéu stands lies a family story as much as a sporting one. “His family is incredible. They’re very united,” Cucalón said.

Even during the years when distance separated them, their support never faded. Those close to the family describe his parents as humble people with strong values.

His brother Fidel is also a soccer player and currently part of Sevilla’s youth system.

All of that history lived inside that hug. Talent, effort, sacrifice and years away from home. As Manuel Ángel’s father said in an emotional interview with DAZN after the debut: taking your son away from home “hurts.”

But the reward, he added, has finally arrived. And it may just be the beginning.
