San Diego MLS team training ground confirmed: Club colours, name and logo?
The 30th team will be added in 2025 when San Diego becomes the latest expansion team. Here’s what we know about the upcoming announcement...
Earlier this year the MLS confirmed that San Diego would be the site of the league’s latest expansion club, taking the total number of teams to 30.
That announcement was the culmination of years of work to bring a top flight team to the area. The team is slated to begin life in MLS in 2025 and fans are starting to get a look at the new addition to the league.
On Monday club officials announced details of the team’s state-of-the-art training facility. The club unveiled plans for a 28-acre facility on a tribal reservation in El Cajon, California. San Diego’s training ground will be the first US professional sports team to erect a training base on tribal land.
The 125,000 square-foot campus will include a 50,000 square-foot sports performance center and a Right to Dream residential youth academy. There will be five full-sized pitches at the facility, three with natural turf and two with synthetic surfaces.
What is the name of the San Diego MLS team?
The San Diego team was confirmed on 18 May 2023 but supporters are still in the dark regarding the team’s name. But fans don’t have much longer the wait and further details are expected later this month.
On Friday, 20 October a special ceremony will be held at Snapdragon Stadium with the club’s name, kit colours and logo set to be announced.
Snapdragon Stadium is expected to be the new team’s home stadium when they begin life in MLS in 2025.
In announcing that San Diego would host the 30th MLS team, league commissioner Don Garber said: “For many years we have believed San Diego would be a terrific MLS market due to its youthful energy, great diversity, and the fact that soccer is an essential part of everyday life for so many people.
“Mohamed Mansour and the Sycuan Tribe have an incredible vision for building a club that will inspire and unite soccer fans throughout the city and region.”
