Santiago Giménez took the bull by the horns and, in the face of questioning from the Mexican fans regarding his true level in the national team, acknowledged that the criticisms of his lack of goals in the Mexican squad stemmed from the recent missed penalty in the friendly against Australia.

“I believe I made a significant mistake by missing the penalty in that manner. It could have been a great opportunity to regain confidence, but in the end, it’s in the past. I have learned from these mistakes, and the last thing I should be dwelling on is that.

“We need to think as a team and then try to score however we can because, in the end, that will help us regain confidence,” he emphasized.

Giménez talks goal droughts

Speaking after the national team’s practice at the Azteca, twenty-four hours before facing Honduras with a two-goal deficit to turn around in the quarterfinals of the Nations League, Giménez acknowledged that forwards are at risk of experiencing goal droughts.

“The truth is that as forwards, we must be prepared for these negative streaks; not everything will always be rosy. (...) While I had a streak of scoring in I don’t know how many consecutive games, now I have a streak of not scoring in I don’t know how many consecutive games.

“All we can do is keep working, keep having faith, and try to end this negative streak soon,” he said.

Mexico fans support

Regarding the support the team expects from Mexican fans during times when it seems they are not performing well on the field, Giménez was positive.

“Personally, I think it’s my first experience as a national team player to play at the Azteca, and as fans, I’ve seen a full stadium supporting us. We hope they support us tomorrow.

“I can tell you that together we will strive to overcome this, and together we will achieve something significant.”
