After a chaotic 2-2 draw in the first leg, Mexico’s Pumas and MLS side Seattle Sounders will battle it out on Wednesday for the CONCACAF Champions League trophy, the winner of which will play in the FIFA Club World Cup for the first time.

Pumas, who blew a 2-0 lead in the first leg at home, are looking to win their fourth CONCACAF title and their first since the 2008 format change, thus maintaining Mexican soccer’s hegemony in the competition.

Seattle, MLS champion in 2016 and 2019, look to become the first non-Mexican team to win the tournament since Costa Rica’s Deportivo Saprissa in 2005.

Only two teams from the North American soccer league (MLS) have won the region, DC United (1998) and the Los Angeles Galaxy (2000), when the tournament was called the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

First leg drama

The agonizing comeback in the first leg, with two penalty goals by Uruguayan Nicolás Lodeiro in the 77th and 90+9th minutes, allows the Sounders to go into the decisive match with morale boosted, although away goals have no additional value in the final.

More than 60,000 fans are expected to pack the stands at Lumen Field in Seattle (Washington), a record attendance for a tournament final.

The Sounders, who rested this weekend in MLS, are relying on the spine that carried them to the 2019 domestic title and 2020 runner-up finish, led by Uruguayan Lodeiro, American Jordan Morris and Peruvian striker Raúl Ruidíaz, winner of two scoring titles in Mexican soccer with Morelia.

The game will kick off on Wednesday at 19H00 (PT) / 0400 CEST (Thursday) at Seattle’s Lumen Field with referee Said Martinez of Honduras.

Possible lineups:

Pumas: Alfredo Talavera - Jesús Rivas, Arturo Ortiz, Nicolás Freire, Efraín Velarde - Leonel López, Higor Meritao, Favio Álvarez, Rogerio de Oliveira - Diogo de Oliveira and Juan Dinenno. Coach: Andrés Lillini.

Seattle Sounders: Stefan Frei - Alexander Roldán, Yeimar Gómez, Xavier Areaga, Nouhou Tolo - Joao Paulo, Albert Rusnák, Cristian Roldán, Nicolás Lodeiro - Jordan Morris and Raúl Ruidíaz. Coach: Brian Schmetzer.
