Senegal players react to AFCON decision: “You can give the crybabies three more goals”

The Senegalese national team was quick to respond after CAF’s decision to take away their Africa Cup of Nations trophy.

Following CAF’s unprecedented decision to strip Senegal of the Africa Cup of Nations title and award it to Morocco, the now former champions reacted quickly on social media. Many of the players who lifted the trophy on 18 January posted photos with the cup and even mocked the verdict issued by the African Confederation’s Appeals Committee.

One of the most outspoken voices was Pathé Ciss, the Rayo Vallecano midfielder. Just minutes after the change of champion was announced, he posted videos on Instagram showing the celebrations after Senegal’s victory over Morocco on the pitch. “They can give the crybabies three more goals,” he wrote on X.

Pape Demba Diop, the Toulouse midfielder, also criticised the decision. “I think we’re in a madhouse,” he wrote. Other members of the squad that delivered the Lions of Teranga’s historic triumph have also shared photos with the trophy and from the street celebrations in Senegal.

Those somewhat ironic responses have also been echoed by the Senegalese Football Federation itself. The federation has not yet issued an official statement about what happened, but it did post a video on social media showing the players celebrating their return to the country after winning the championship.
