Sergio ‘Kun’ Agüero investigated for instigating violence

Last month’s Avellaneda derby between Independiente and Racing Club continues to make headlines. After the match referee Yael Falcón Pérez received a lot of criticism, especially for a penalty awarded for a push on Racing’s Facundo Mura.

One of those critics was Sergio Kun Agüero, who after the match made a number of social media posts about Pérez’s performance and referred to it in Twitch stream.

“How can he, the referee, what the fuck is his name... Yael Falcón Pérez. Listen to me, Yael Falcón, that name is a disaster,” Agüero said.

Referrring to the penalty incident in particular, Agüero told his Twitch audience: “You can say ‘It starts outside and ends up inside’, but he goes on to say “Where the first contact is made is where the foul is called.’ The truth is that he’s ready to kick the shit out of this fathead.”

Just to hammer home the point, Agüero then shared a series of memes on Twitter. Many of them suggested that Independiente had been robbed by the officials.

In response to Agüero comments Eduardo Aparicio, head of the Agency for the Prevention of Violence in Sport, has opened a case against the Argentine.

In a note to the prosecutor’s office, Aparicio wrote: “Comments made by the former soccer player, internationally recognized as a supporter of Independiente, Sergio Leonel Agüero, have come out in the media, in relation to the work carried out by the referee Yael Falcon Perez in the match in question, in which there was a disputed play that led to a penalty in favor of the visiting club”.

Aparicio continues: “It is necessary to mention that his comments towards the referring authority - aggressive and demeaning - clearly contravene the current regulations on sports safety, and could be interpreted as instigating violence.”

In addition, Aparicio reports that there have been “threats received by referee Yael Falcón Pérez and his family” and “flares launched at his mother’s home” after the game in question.

Neither Agüero nor his representatives have responded publicly to the allegations.
