Update:

Spanish center back Sergio Ramos will be ready to play for Mexican club Monterrey in the upcoming Club World Cup, coach Domènec Torrent confirmed on Tuesday.

“We had to be careful with Sergio because he was coming off a serious injury and couldn’t take part in the last game of the final phase against Toluca. Now he’s fully prepared to face the next match,” explained the coach, who previously worked as an assistant to Pep Guardiola, during a press conference.

Ramos, 39, has not played an official match for Monterrey since April 20 due to a muscle injury that sidelined him and kept him out of the final phase of the season with his new team.

The 2010 World Cup winner with Spain and longtime Real Madrid icon signed with Monterrey this past February, after being out of professional action since leaving Sevilla in June 2024.

The defender was slow to make his debut for the Rayados, ultimately playing in only eight of 17 matches during the 2025 Clausura tournament, as well as one game in the Concacaf Champions Cup.

Having overcome those injury issues, Torrent plans to rely on Ramos as a locker room leader.

“Sergio is a leader on the field, that’s no secret. He commands respect, pushes his teammates, and I see him improving every day. But in the early training sessions, we wanted to ease him back in. Sergio wanted to go full speed right away, but we didn’t want to risk losing him again, so we did medical tests to make sure everything was in order,” the coach added.

Another key player in Torrent’s starting lineup will be fellow Spaniard Sergio Canales, the offensive engine for a team that has won five domestic league titles.

“Canales has to be a fundamental piece in our game plan, and we need to find the best position for him. He’s a player who can score, provide assists, and control the pace of the match,” Torrent explained.

Monterrey is in Group E of the Club World Cup alongside Italy’s Inter Milan, Argentina’s River Plate, and Urawa Red Diamonds of Japan. They will make their tournament debut on Tuesday, June 17, against Inter Milan.
