With a series of decisions that left fans scratching their heads – including benching Lucas Ocampos and Óliver Torres from the start, failing to go on the offensive when the opponent went down to 10 men, and delaying substitutions until the 77th minute – Rayados saw their Clausura 2025 campaign come to an end. Once again, the most expensive squad in Mexican football has been knocked out, and as expected, speculation is now swirling over the immediate future of several players and staff.

Beyond the weight of the result itself, what stood out most in this encounter was how much the Bombonera seems to weigh on Monterrey. With this latest loss, their long winless streak in Toluca continues to grow. The last time Monterrey won at Nemesio Diez was back in 2021, and this latest chapter only reinforces their struggles in the so-called “Infierno.”

Rayados’ last six visits to Nemesio Diez:

Matchday 2, Clausura 2025: Toluca 1-1 Rayados

Matchday 5, Apertura 2023: Toluca 1-0 Rayados

Matchday 9, Apertura 2022: Toluca 1-1 Rayados

Matchday 14, Clausura 2021: Toluca 1-2 Rayados

Not only will the playoffs move forward without Sergio Ramos and company, but Toluca’s dominance over Monterrey at home was cemented in a way that once again denied the visitors the kind of result their financial investment demands. The message was clear: even with a man down, Toluca were more than capable of beating a squad that, on paper, should have been unbeatable.
