Sergio Ramos is still without a team: could he join Real Madrid?
The ex-Real Madrid captain is still without a team... might he be about to join Sevilla?
Former Real Madrid and PSG defender, Sergio Ramos, is still without a club after being released from the French side. The player, at 37-years-old, is training at home, despite being linked with his former side, Sevilla FC, who have ruled out a deal.
“Sergio Ramos wants to come? I want an airplane, gift it to me”. Those were the words of José Castro, the President of Sevilla Fútbol Club during the UEFA Super Cup game against Manchester City in Athens. Sevilla have had something of a strange start to life in the 23/24 season, with a close encounter against City (where they lost on penalties) coming before a crazy 4-3 away loss to Alavés that has set alarm bells ringing and puts the side at the bottom end of the table, once more peering over into the abyss.
“We have six centre-backs and Ramos does not fit the financial model of the club”, said the side’s Sporting Director, Victor Orta, who took over from Monchi after leading Leeds to relegation in the Premier League last season. The truth is that Sevilla’s centre-backs, despite Orta’s rejection of Ramos, are not in the finest of form: Marcao and Nianzou are two of the centre-backs at the club and are almost always injured; Gattoni has only recently arrived and showed his weaknesses already in the league; Kike Salas took the brunt of the criticism against Alavés; Gudelj, a midfielder; and Lioc Badé, who needs to mature on the pitch, and got sent off in the last game.
Could Sergio Ramos go to MLS?
Both in private and in public, Sevilla insist on ruling out signing the player who moved from Sevilla to Real Madrid in 2005, who remains a free agent and is exercising at his home just days before the transfer window slams shut. He has had offers from various countries and leagues such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey and MLS, but he has not accepted them as he has offered himself to Sevilla throughout the entire summer to no avail. The club have stood firm and rejected all proposals for the player who has always been publicly known as a fan of the club.
Errors in the backline and a lack of confidence in the players’ abilities have given the club a new set of worries as they head into the 23/24 season. Public opinion is that the ex-Madrid man could provide experience and decisiveness in defence. Despite being 37-years-old, Ramos’ positive time at PSG plus the fact that he is ready to accept a low salary have caused a lot of Sevillistas to see his return as something positive, especially given the frailties that have been seen at the beginning of the season in LaLiga.
Ramos to Real Madrid?
Real Madrid, despite the positive start to the campaign, suffered a huge pair of injuries setbacks just before the season began, with Belgian goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois and Brazilian defender Éder Militão out for what could be the entire season due to identical knee ligament tears. As a result, the name of Sergio Ramos was suggested by fans to plug the gap, for exactly the same reasons as the Sevilla fans.
Alas, the operation has and no club sources have confirmed that Real Madrid are interested in the player who is still setting his heart on a return to where it all began.
