South Korea vs Portugal summary: Korea into last 16 after late Hwang goal, score, goals, highlights 2-1 | World Cup 2022
South Korea vs Portugal: as it happened
NOW! FULL TIME!
South Korea 2-1 Portugal
SOUTH KOREA GO THROUGH ON GOALS SCORED
How do I write a full-time summary about that?
South Korea looked fenced in by Portugal for a lot of that game, but they were really just waiting like sleeping lions to pounce on Pepe and Silva at the back, which they managed to do after a fantastic pass from Son and the coolest of finishes from Hwang, whose goal ultimately proved to be decisive and made Luis Suárez cry.
Did the better team win? Did Portugal play bad enough to lose? Do we even need to answer these questions?
Portugal did what they do and looked just about fine with proceedings, disappointing you to the point of madness before making you think that you want to find a Portuguese grandparent so you can support their brilliance for the rest of your life.
Overall, nothing matter and everything matters, which is right about where my head is at with this game, this group and this World Cup as a whole: it has been utter madness and I just hope it continues to give us amazing moments like we have seen!

South Korea assistant coach, Sergio Costa:
"We have a lot of courage, we have a lot of heart and we are very happy."
"We played a competitive game, we are very happy to get through to the next round."
"Kang In Lee has a lot of technical qualities, he caused a lot of problems for them."
"All teams prepare well, they all do their research and then the players interpret the system and the individuals make it difficult."

Korea mount one last attack! Cut out by the defender.
A Portugal goal would put Uruguay into second place...
Into the last minute...
both teams happy for the other side to have the ball.
Two minutes to go... Korea Republic have a goal-kick.
Nobody wants to play now! Korea are lumping the ball up to the towards the Portugal defenders with every opportunity!
It's Korea through as it stands on GOALS SCORED
GOOOOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL SOUTH KOREA SOUTH KOREA!!!!!!!!!!!!
KOREA COUNTERED, SON SLIPPED HWANG THROUGH THE GAP AND HE SLID THE BALL UNDERNEATH COSTA TO GO AHEAD.
KOREA ARE THROUGH AS IT STANDS.
Six minutes added on.
Korea sit deep again as Portugal probe around the edge of the area. Bu they know the Koreans can pounce, so William Carvalho is going a very good job of making sure the passing option is always open for his teammate on either wing.
A dangerous attack from South Korea ends with William tracking back brilliantly to steal the ball away. That was dangerous.
Cleared away by Cancelo up the pitch.
Korea edge forward...
and they win a corner!
Cho close to getting away from the Portuguese defence with a nice turn but William Carvalho clears well
Last throw of the dice for Korea Republic, who are ONE GOAL AWAY from taking Uruguay's place in second.
OFF: Lee K & Kim Y
ON: Hwang U & Son J
OFF: Mário & Vitinha
ON: William & Bernardo S
We're back underway.
South Korean changes coming up.
Kim (centre-back) is down receiving treatment.
Dalot with a dangerous cross in from the right that bounces off the legs of two Korean defenders. Cleared away.
Portugal trying to calm the Korean pressure with some controlled possession...
Foul by Palhinha on Kang In Lee just outside the box.
Plenty of shouts for a yellow card, nothing given by Mr Red Card.
Free-kick hit over.
Rafa Leão, talking of fireworks, looks like he eats them for breakfast. He just made a spectacular run down the right and smashed a shot towards Kim (goalkeeper).
There's somebody in the crowd wearing a full banana suit... nope, I don't understand either.
Penalty shout for South Korea!
Nope, replay confirms that the cross hit João Cancelo in the ribs. As you were.
Both teams are going for it here, Korea have definitely decided to play with fireworks down their socks.
Hwang Hee-Chan on for Lee Jae-Sung
CHANCE FOR SOUTH KOREA
A shot from the centre is struck by Hwang but Costa saves.
Son with a shot from the right side of the box but Costa saves easily.
Subs!
Cool guy Nunes, Neves & RonaldoOFF
Palhinha, André Silva & Rafa Leão ON
Nunes with one of favourite things in football: a back control. Instant cool points there.
Portugal have stepped up a gear now, and are having a long period of possession on the edge of the Korean box. They're probing for ways in, but the Asian side are standing strong for now.
Changes are being prepared for both sides.
A dangerous attack from South Korea, who must be reading the live feed. Son runs down the right wing before being taken out by Mr Nice Guy, Pepe.
The score is the same between Ghana and Uruguay; Korea need one to turn the group on its head.
0-2
Cho can't control the ball as it arrives at his feet from a cross. The striker puts his head in his hands, as he was alone behind the defence.
Right-winger (on the pitch) Lee hits a shot from the edge of the box after the resulting corner is cleared towards him. It bounces wide.
Son shoots from the right side of the box!
Blocked by Antonio Silva.
That was a very dangerous moment, well defended by the Portuguese centre-back.
Another mistake from goalkeeper Kim. He panicked and kicked the ball straight out of Korea's left side. Nowhere near the full-back.
Horta is down but looks fit to continue after some magic water is poured on his ankle from the team doctor.
Another sitter for Ronaldo!
He missed the ball!
It was a great run after a cross from the left to the near post but the veteran swings a leg at it without making any contact. Laughter fills the stadium.
Nunes tries to clip a reverse pass from the centre of the pitch towards Ronaldo in the left channel but the ball hits Kim (centre-back) who tumbles to the ground like a Jenga tower.
A mistake from goalkeeper Kim in build up as he plays the ball straight to João Mário. Korea drop back well to block out any immediate danger, but Portugal start to knock the ball from left to right, looking for an opening.
South Korea with the same plan as before, sitting off Pepe...
who rolls the ball through Kang's legs like a Brazilian winger!
Ronaldo is caught offside by the Korean defence. Dalot had played him in behind with a long ball.
Cancelo finds space down the left but hits his cross into the upper atmosphere.
Here we go!
The players are back out on the pitch.
Statistics coming up....
Because we all love maths, don't we!
Possession: 44-56
Passes into opposition half: 110-105
Passing accuracy %: 85-90
Forward passes: 117-140
Final third entries: 28-27
It's very even...
And that's all for now!
HT: 1-1
( 0-2 )
A bit of a tough game to analyse, as both teams have been just about fine without being either terribly bad or terrifyingly good. Portugal have looked average - which is understandable given they're through - but have had some nice moments from Nunes, Vitinha and Dalot.
Korea have looked average because, well, they're average. The goal will give them hope, but they need to be a bit more daring and trust that they can take care of the Portugal attack standing a bit further away from their own goal.
We haven't seen many upsets from deep-lying low-block teams during this World Cup, they've all come from the weaker sides who have gone out to attack the big boys.
Maybe South Korea could try some of that. And one more goal will see Uruguay out!
Vitinha plays a fantastic ball over Korea's defensive line but Nunes can't find the touch...
Oooooo, a good cross from Hwang from the left side almost hits the head of one, two three Korean attackers - but it misses them all by an inch.
Two minutes added on.
Into the last minute of the half.
Chance! Horta receives inside the box from the right and spins well. His shot is weak however, and Kim (goalkeeper) has no trouble in collecting.
RONALDO MISSES A SITTER!
A shot from the edge of pox is parried into his path but his diving header goes wide... I have no idea how!
Some people are trying to get a Mexican wave going in the stadium, but lots more are stopping it. I thank them.
SON GOES CLOSE!
He gets the ball from distance in the middle channel, takes a touch to lift the ball onto his left side before hitting a shot straight at Costa in the Portugal goal.
Korea need two goals right now to go through...
Ronaldo takes the most acrobatic run up I think I've ever seen for a shot that is immediately blocked by Kim (centre-back) on the right side of the box.
Yellow for Kang In Lee after he brings down Nunes.
Nunes hits a volley from a corner - but he forgets he's not Paul Scholes - and it bounces tamely towards Kim in goal.
Dalot with a shot from range. Kim gets down well to push it wide.
Korea are happy to sit off Portugal and pounce when they can isolate the defenders against Cho and Son. For now, it's all Portugal with the ball comfortably in their own half.
URUGUAY HAVE SCORED AGAIN.
0-2
As it stands:
Portugal - 7
Uruguay - 4
Ghana - 3
South Korea - 2
SO CLOSE FROM RONALDO
WHAT A SAVE FROM KIM.
He was played through and his shot was tapped wide by Kim's amazing reflexes.
URUGUAY HAVE ALSO SCORED. Right now, they're through.
0-1
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLL KOREA KOREA KOREA
IT WAS KIM.
KIM YOUNG GWON!!!
He got his leg down to a ball that was missed by Ronaldo and tapped it in the net.
Kang In Lee brought down close to halfway after Nunes pushed the small boy over. Kang did well to shield the ball and buy the free-kick, which will be launched into the box...
cleared for a corner.
A cross from Dalot flies over everybody...
and the rebound is swung in by Nunes: Ronaldo was inches away from finding a touch but Kim (centre-back) does well to clear.
Here, meanwhile, Korea are slowly creeping forward like cheeky puppies. They're getting themselves into this game little by little...
Andre Ayew has missed the penalty in the game against Uruguay.
The score stays the same.
Son almost gets on the end of a good pass from left-back, Kim. A good chance but it was too heavy.
Korea with some calm possession now; let's see if they can make their mark on this game after the positive spell they just had.
Update from the other game, VAR is checking a possible Ghana penalty...
The correct decision.
A cross from the left was met by left back Kim but he was in an illegal position.
KOREAN GOAL RULED OFFSIDE
Son with the touch of a Korean angel after a long ball from the right crosses the whole width of the pitch and lands beautifully on his toes. His shot is subsequently blocked by Dalot.
CHANCE FOR PORTUGAL!
Cancelo twists and turns Kim's body, mind and soul before whacking a low shot at the goalkeeper from the left of the box.
Pepe is not being put under any pressure from South Korea and has been able to play long passes into both the left and right channels on multiple occasions.
Korea are sitting off him and the centre-back is causing a lot of problems with his distribution.
Ghana vs Uruguay is currently 0-0...
Portugal comfortably pressing South Korea all the way back to goalkeeper, Kim.
You get the feeling that the quality and calmness is just not there for the Asian side.
A terrible start for Korea Republic, who are now bottom of the group:
9 points
4 points
2 points
1 points
But, as we've seen so far at this stage of the tournament, nothing is finished until the referee takes the ball home and locks it away.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL POOORTUGAAALLL
HORTA WITH THE FINISH
Pepe hits a long ball to Dalot on the right side. The defender runs 30 metres down the wing and plays a simple cut-back to Horta who smacks the ball into the net. Easy from Portugal.
Right back Kim almost gets away down the wing as a header from Cho flies behind the defensive line. It was too fast for him to collect and the ball runs out of play.
Ronaldo gets his first touch and is greeted by a chorus of boos from the crowd. He'll have Piers Morgan on the phone at half-time if this continues.
Some nervy possession at the back for Portugal, who are being chased everywhere by the Asian side.
An early attack from South Korea, who work the ball forward well through the middle. Good work from Cho to win the ball.
A nice spin from Cho in the centre of the pitch, but he is brought down by Silva.
South Korea kick us off from left to right!
Updates on Ghana vs Uruguay as they happen.
Anyway, formalities over, time to get on with the football!
Portugal in all white; Korea Republic in all red. And it's lovely highlighter red. None of them will be getting lost today.
The players are out of the tunnel...
Time for the national anthems!
South Korea's is an excellent song, very regal, very emotional.
I always enjoy Portugal's, it's like a lovely Christmas carol.
The light show is flashing and the players are in the tunnel!
(The big World Cup trophy is not there...)
OK, let's run through the groups and line-ups again

Fifteen minutes to go!
Warmups complete!
Changing room talks have commenced!
Let us know where you are watching along from on Twitter or in the comments below! (@English_AS / @j4brennan on Twitter)
Cristiano the childminder
Shall I make a 'where is Ronaldo's club badge' joke?
No? OK.
Anyway, still a fascinating stat.
The players are on the pitch!
Everyone is warming up now... just under half an hour to go.
In other news...
Luis Suárez starts for Uruguay against Ghana. I'll keep you posted on any updates throughout the Korea vs Portugal match.
It's the Paulo Bento derby, today, as he takes on his home nation. Bento took charge of South Korea in 2018 and he is currently guiding them through their 11th World Cup appearance.
The last time - and only time - that South Korea have faced Portugal was in the 2002 World Cup, where the Asian side won 1-0, thanks to a goal from... yes! Park Ji-sung!
That year they came 4th, and it remains their best ever finish at a World Cup, beating Italy and Spain before losing to Germany. Not bad at all.
They're in white, tonight
The dressing rooms re ready: Portugal in white, Korea in red.
Portugal have arrived at the stadium!
Serious faces all round, even from Mr Nice Guy, Pepe.
While we wait for kick-off, check out this - the perfect graphic explanation of why Japan's goal was legal last night. Just superb. Check out @Slightly_Random
And here's the South Korea starting team:
The Reds have it all to play for today!
Portugal XI:
In rather unexpected news, Mr Cristiano Ronaldo is starting!
Good news for South Korea: Injury update
OK, word on the ground seems to be that Cancelo may start at left-back, as Guerreiro suffered a niggling injury in training; Cristiano is expected to start from the bench after missing training on Wednesday. Gonçalo Ramos should replace him up front.
Don't worry about Ghana vs Uruguay...
I'll be keeping you updated with that game, too.
Here's who's in charge for today's clash.
It's Mr 10 red cards, Facundo Tello.
Find out why he's called that (at least by myself) in Calum's article.
Team news:
Portugal:
NunoMendes, Danilo and Otávio are out for today's game; Guerreiro may start in place of the injured left-back.
South Korea:
Hwang Hee-Chan is the only doubt as he is yet to feature so far during the tournament; as for him, Bentohas a full-strength squad available.
Here are the permutations for Group H: what everybody needs everybody else to do to go through.
So, to South Korea vs Portugal
Two of my favourite flags.
Portugal are already through, and only need a point to secure top spot, something they might want to do, as the canary yellow of Brazil lurks in the corner for the team who dares to finish second.
South Korea , after a 0-0 against Uruguay and a 3-2 loss to Ghana , sit on just a single point. They need Uruguay to beat the Africans and then hope goal difference plays in their favour if that want to progress, which I think they do.
An attempt at a World Cup summary so far...
So far we've had pretty much the most mental end to a group phase that I can remember, although my head is so frazzled from it all that that's probably not quite the achievement.
Groups A and B breezed by without a fuss, England (no flag) and the USA went through, as did Netherlands and Senegal . It all seemed like we were laid on a calm beach, with not a cloud in the sky.
Then came the crazy.
Saudi Arabia played Mexico , and Poland faced Argentina in what turned out to be millions of people screaming for Polish yellow cards so we could have the unimaginable excitement of 'drawing lots', something so simple but at the same time, incredibly fun and mysterious.
And then it just got a whole lot more... everything.
Germany looked to be swiping Costa Rica aside like a lion brushes off a daring mouse from his mane, but the Central American side bit back, scoring in unbelievable fashion - at the same time Japan went ahead against Spain! In the end, the Germans won but did not go through, thanks to Asian heroics, but my, oh my, what football we saw.
You have all the links above to all the minute-by-minutes if you would like to re-read our madness at AS.
Hello hello and welcome to the AS live feed of... yes! It's the mighty South Korea vs Portugal game in Group H! How excting, everybody.
If you don't know by now because of the flag usage - which is my favourite thing ever and I don't know what I'll do when the World Cup is over - it's Joe here and I'll be guiding you through the sights, sounds and possibly even smells of the game today.
