Spain star Alexia Putellas out for 10-12 months after ACL surgery
The Barça and Spanish national team captain underwent surgery on her left knee on Tuesday and is expected to be out for between 10 and 12 months.
Alexia Putellas underwent successful surgery on her left knee today at the General Hospital in Barcelona. Surgeons worked on repairing the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee, which she ruptured in training on 5 July, just two days before the start of the 2022 Women’s Euros. A statement issued by Barcelona’s Medical Services said that the operation was a success and that Alexia is likely to be out of action for between ten and twelve months.
Huge blow for Barcelona and Spain
The Catalan midfielder, who picked up the Ballon d’Or Féminin last year, was expected to be one of the stars at Euro 2022 and her absence, which could be for up to a whole year, is a severe blow to both Spain and for a Barça side that will be without their captain for the entire 2022-23 season. Hopefully Alexia will be back ahead of time but in the worst case scenario, she may not have recovered fully in time for next year’s Women’s World Cup finals which will be held in Australia and New Zealand from 20 July to 20 August.
