EURO 2024
Spain’s Cucurella trolls England legend Gary Neville after Euro 24 win
The Spanish defender wanted to send his ‘thanks’ to the former English player, who had a dig at him earlier in the Euros.
Spain has become the European Championship for the fourth time in its history. Under the leadership of Luis de la Fuente, the Spanish team was not initially considered one of the favourites, with England, France, Portugal, and Germany seen as the main contenders. The squad selection faced some criticism, but ultimately, a team was built that now holds the record for the most Euro wins in history, all seven games without even a tie.
Neville questions Cucurella and Spain
One of the doubters ahead of the tournament was Englishman Gary Neville. The former Manchester United defender, now pundit didn’t expect much from La Roja and specifically their own full-back, Marc Cucurella.
“I think he [Cucurella] is one of the reasons I think Spain probably can’t go all the way,” Gary began. “He hasn’t been convincing at Chelsea. He played some matches towards the end of the season. He is aggressive, tenacious, he’s a small, very active full-back. His price tag continues to astonish everyone to this day.”
Today, after Spain won in the final against Neville’s own country, and having demonstrated across the competition that they were the best of all – with wins over Croatia, Italy, Germany and France en route – many are recalling those words.
Cucurella, the target of these criticisms, kept Neville’s remarks in mind and was quick to respond after the final through his personal Instagram account, addressing Neville directly with some type of thank you.
“We went all the way, Gary. Thanks for your support.”
The Spanish defender has been one of the revelations of the tournament, and his teammates, including Unai Simón, acknowledged his contributions. “Cucurella is one of the best. People in Spain are crazy about him, and we’ll surely see it in the celebrations. I’m very happy for him.”
