Spurs captain Cristian Romero speaks after Tottenham humbled in historic defeat to Nottingham Forest
Tottenham suffered another crushing defeat in front of their home fans as they inch closer to the relegation zone following their loss to Nottingham Forest.
Things have gone from bad to worse following Tottenham‘s historic loss to relegation rival Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon. Spurs are now in 17th place, with just a point above West Ham in 18th with seven matches to go.
Historically bad Spurs
It was a battle at the bottom of the table between two sides looking to keep their heads about water and the relegation zone. Following a brutal two legs against Atletico de Madrid in the Champions League, it was time to return to the league and try to reverse the recent run of form Igor Tudor´s men have been going through.
Nottingham Forest came into Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium in 17th, a spot below Spurs in the standings, and won 3-0 to become the third side that was 17th or lower in the table to beat Spurs at home by a score of 3-0 or worse. The haven’t won a league match in their last 13 tries. Their last league win came in 2025, just three days before the New Year when they beat Crystal Palace away from home.
Club capitan Christian Romero had to face the music after the match, and try to explain what exactly happened again Forest, especially in the second half. “The first half was good but in the second half, we lose the confidence, lose the ball, conceded another stupid goal. This is difficult, but now it’s finished,” said the Argentinian referring to the 45th minute goal scored by Igor Jesus.
Each match a “final,” says Romero
Things unraveled from there, and Forest tucked two more away to take a massive three points out of North London. Romero was sure to thank the fans for their support, “This season is tough, especially in this moment. Another day bad for us, another game lost at home. The first thing to the fans is thank you for today and also for every day, staying with us.”
One section of fans had planned a protest in the days leading up to the match against Forest, but they eventually called off the demonstration against the club’s board and owners deciding it was too critical of a moment in the season, and they would be better served supporting the club. The supporters came out early and greeted Tottenham as the bus arrived at the stadium, but fans left fuming after another dull performance.
Now more than ever, Romero knows each and every match needs to played like a final with no margin for error. “The most important thing for us is to play like a final now. It’s very tough, it’s a bad season.” Three of Tottenham´s last seven matches are at home, while four of their final seven matches are against teams in the bottom half of the table.
