Spurs could swap league places with Wrexham next season

Spurs are in a mess on the pitch, while Wrexham are flying high in the Championship.

Reports suggest that the club, if relegated, would be forced to cut the wages of their top stars.

Update:

Tottenham Hotspur are living on the edge of a crisis that could potentially see them relegated to the Championship, England’s second division.

At the time of writing, only four points separates the north London club from the drop zone with just 10 games remaining and the form table has them rock-bottom across the last ten games, having gone winless during that time.

They changed their manager, getting rid of Thomas Frank, in early February, and moved to bring in former Juventus head coach Igor Tudor. The thinking behind this move was that a ‘new manager bounce’ from a ‘firefighter’, someone well-known for having instant impacts at underperforming clubs, would give them enough of a rebound in the league.

However, their form has not turned, and a loss against Arsenal was followed by a defeat to Fulham, and Spurs sit on the edge of their first relegation since 1977. Tudor already looks as empty as Eyeore’s vision board, and the squad is chronically lacking in self-confidence.

The problems at the club are not new: Spurs finished 17th last season in the First Division in a terrible domestic season that also saw them win the UEFA Conference League final against Manchester United, the 16th placed Premier League team that previous campaign.

Relegation would open up a Pandora’s Box of possibilities for Spurs. Reports suggest that most players would face mandatory wage cuts as big as 50% in order to soften the financial blow of dropping out of the top division.

Were Tottenham Hotspur to be relegated, they would welcome some of the UK’s most curious clubs to their $1 billion stadium. Wrexham would be one of them, but given their strong performances in the Championship have them on the edge of the playoffs, the wildest of outcomes would see the two clubs of completely contrasting fortunes swap places in the English football pyramid.
