Emerson Royal would be a perfect fit playing out on the wing at Real Madrid - at least, that is how his agent sees it. Emerson Zulu, who represents the player, explained in an extensive interview with the Charla Podcast that his client’s time at Tottenham is coming to an end and that he sees the 24-year-old defender returning to LaLiga - to play at the Santiago Bernabéu.

“There is a strong possibility that Emerson will leave Tottenham. We want that,” the agent explained when asked about the future of the Brazilian, who is under contract at Spurs until June 2026. The Londoners are immersed in a major crisis - exasperated by a woeful run of results, which climaxed in Sunday’s 6-1 thrashing away at Newcastle. With one league win in five games, Spurs are clinging on to fifth place but could miss out on European football next season altogether if they drop more points in the final six games. The club is also looking for a new manager after sacking Antonio Conte last month and the man brought in as a temporary replacement - Cristian Stellini was given his marching orders this evening, after just five games in charge.

Emerson meanwhile is eyeing a return to LaLiga. After the full-back impressed at Betis, Barcelona decided to buy him outright for €9 million in June 2021. The Culés had previously part-owned the defender with the Verdiblancos but on arrival at Camp Nou, Emerson failed to reproduce the kind of promise he’d shown with Betis and Barcelona decided to let him go a month later, selling him to Spurs for €25 million.

With Tottenham, Emerson has made 73 first team appearances, scoring three and with a hand in another two. He’s made 16 starts in the Premier League but recently lost his place with both Conte and Stellini favouring Pedro Porro on the right flank.

With the current uncertainty at Spurs and two years to run on his contract, Emerson’s future is back on the agenda. His agent is already placing him back in Spain as a possible substitute/replacement for Dani Carvajal at Real Madrid. “We believe that it is time for him to take a bigger leap and go to a team that is fighting for trophies. A giant club. I think he would fit in at Real Madrid,” the agent stated.

Although he played in all of Spurs’ Champions League games this season and was among the nominees for the Premier League Player of the Month award in February, Emerson has found it harder to hold down a regular place in the side in recent weeks. The full-back was left out of the squad for the last four games and his last appearance was as a sub in the 3-3 draw against Southampton on 18 March when he came on for the last four minutes. Now, he wants a future away from White Hart Lane.
