St. Louis City SC wrote another chapter in the MLS history books on Saturday night as the best start for an expansion side has evolved to one of the greatest starts to a season, by any team.

The CityPark based side have joined LA Galaxy (1996) and Sporting Kansas City (2012) as the only teams in MLS history to earn 15 points from five matches to start a season but the new franchise side have recorded an unprecedented goal difference of +11 from their five openers.

After new season wins over Austin, Charlotte, Portland and San Jose while averaging nearly three goals per match, MLS’s newest club put four past Real Salt Lake in Sandy, Utah, on Saturday night cementing their place as the first expansion team in MLS history to begin its debut season with five straight victories.

A 3-0 victory over San Jose last weekend gave St. Louis goalkeeper Roman Burki his first clean sheet of the season, a feat which he repeated in Utah.

“You could see Roman was itching for the clean sheet,” City SC coach Bradley Carnell said. “He really wanted this one badly. We gave him a ball in the locker room congratulating him on his first clean sheet. But I thought it was a total team performance.”

Head coach Carnell said that said there’s also a ‘swagger and some big personalities in the locker room’ as his team now set their sights on a sixth win as they welcome Minnesota United next Saturday.
