Súper Clásico - América vs Chivas: possible starting XIs for Liga MX clash

The most anticipated game of the Apertura 2022 will take place on Saturday 17 September as Club América and Chivas go head to head in the latest edition of the Liga MX Clásico Nacional, which pits the two most successful clubs in Mexican football history together at the Estadio Azteca. América have 13 titles to their name, Chivas 12, and the panorama in Liga MX this season makes this match particularly important to the outcome of the 2022 Apertura with América just one point ahead of Monterrey as the seek to win the tournament for the first time in four years.

Fernando Ortiz’s side go into the Super Clásico in good form, having won nine of nine before a 3-3 draw against Santos Laguna. Due to that run and their league position, América go into the game as favourites while Chivas will try to cause an upset despite being 10 points adrift of las Águilas and having gone almost two years without a Super Clásico victory.

América vs Chivas: injuries and suspensions

During the draw against Santos Laguna, defender Emilio Lara did not feature due to a knock to his ankle but the Mexico international is expected to be fir for the Clásico Nacional. However, versatile Paraguay defender Bruno Valdez has been ruled out. .

Chivas winger Jesús Angulo has recovered from the fibula fracture he suffered at the end of the 2022 Clausura and could play a part against América while midfielder Jesús Molina has returned to the pitch with the under-20s but he is not expected to be fit to feature. Mexico international striker José Juan Macías remains a long-term absentee with a cruciate ligament injury.

The last time Guadalajara beat América in the Apertura was in 2016, when they won 3-0 via goals from Isaac Brizuela and Carlos Peña. Since then, the last time Chivas claimed Super Clásico bragging rights over Las Águilas was in a second leg match in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Guardianes.
