Inter Miami are through to the last eight of the Leagues Cup, however, head coach Tata Martino was not entirely satisfied with his side’s performance.

Martino appeared before the media to analyze the crazy contest in Texas. “I appreciate the team’s character: never give up”, was the first thing the former FC Barcelona coach said.

Importance of Messi

He discussed the importance of having Lionel Messi in his squad and explained the role he played in the victory over FC Dallas. “We can’t ignore the fact that we have the best player in the world. We have to try to take advantage of having him by playing better,” he added.

But he is also aware that it will take time to shape an idea with the team David Beckham and the Mas brother are putting together. “You don’t shape the team with just 15 days of work,” he continued.

Martino knows that the quality and experience provided by the Argentina captain, as well as the experience of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, gives the team from Florida an extra edge. “When we have our moments, we can be lethal in front of goal.”

Improvement required

Despite another Miami win, Martino expressed his concern with some of the mistakes made at Toyota Stadium on Sunday. “We are very happy to have progressed having been 4-2 down after 80 minutes, but that doesn’t mean we can overlook all the things we need to improve.

“Inter Miami improved in the last 30 minutes. In other games, we had defensive solidity, which we may not have shown today,” he concluded.
