Former Mexico manager Gerardo “Tata” Martino is in talks with Inter Miami, report The Athletic.

Speaking before a testimonial match honoring former Argentina international Maxi Rodríguez, who played over 200 games for Argentine outfit Newell’s Old Boys, Martino said, “We’re talking to Inter Miami.”

Messi and Busquets move to MLS

Martino managed new Inter Miami signings Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets at Barcelona from 2013 to 2014.

The 60-year-old has previous experience in MLS, winning an MLS Cup as manager of Atlanta United in 2018.

A source close to Martino told The Athletic that Messi and Martino have a good working relationship.

Neville sacked

Martino had a four-year spell with Mexico and could be set for a return to MLS after Phil Neville was relieved of his duties at the club on 2 June.

Neville, whose son Harvey plies his trade at the club, joined Inter Miami in 2021 and led them to the 2022 MLS Cup play-offs but was sacked after 10 defeats in 15 games this season.

“MLS is my weakness,” Martino told The Athletic earlier this year.
