The big name arrivals in Liga MX ahead of the Clausura 2024

The new Liga MX tournament gets underway on 12 January in Queretaro and many of the league’s 18 clubs are still in the process of bolstering their respective squads.

No sooner has the Apertura 2023 ended with Club América beating Tigres to claim their 14th Liga MX title, thoughts now turn to new competition which begins on 12 January. Ahead of the 2024 Clausura, Mexican soccer clubs have been busy in the transfer market preparing their squads as they get ready for the next tournament.

Here’s a look at some of the biggest names who will grace the 2024 Clausura.

Fernando Gago (Chivas)

After the departure of the Serbian coach Veljko Paunovic from the Akron Stadium, the Chivas board wasted little time in finding a new head coach bringing in Argentine Fernando Gago. This will be the first time the former Roma and Real Madrid coaches away from his native Argentina.

Gabriel Fernández (Cruz Azul)

The Uruguayan attacker surprised many as he left the ranks of Pumas to join recent underperforming Cruz Azul team. In his spell with the university side, the 29-year-old played 23 official games in the Pumas jersey and only contributed to nine goals.

Juan Brunetta (Tigres)

Tigres will look to go one stage further in the 2024 Clausura and continue to look for reinforcements to bolster their already powerful squad. Argentine Juan Brunetta joins the Nuevo Leon outfit making the move from Santos Laguna.

Franco Fagúndez (Santos Laguna)

Santos Laguna recently confirmed the arrival of Uruguayan Franco Fagúndez who joins the Liga MX side after three decent seasons with Nacional de Montevideo as they 23-year-old now embarks on his first footballing experience outside his homeland.

Andrés Micolta (Pachuca)

Pachuca have opted to reinforce their defensive backline and confirmed the signing of the Ecuadorian Andrés Micolta. The South American officially joins Los Tuzos on January 1st (2024) when his current deal with El Nacional in Ecuador expires.

Gonzalo Piovi (Cruz Azul)

Cruz Azul are anxious to avoid yet another resounding failure and have been one of the most active Liga MX sides in the current transfer market with Argentinean Gonzalo Piovi joining the CDMX side from Racing Club de Avellaneda. After loan spells with Gimnasia, Defensa y Justicia and Colon, the right back embarks on his first overseas experience abroad.

Piero Quispe (Pumas)

Pumas came close to returning to a Liga MX final in the Apertura with Tigres ending their tilt at a title. Peruvian Piero Quispe has already arrived in Mexico moves from Universitario to the university side in Mexico City with the Lima born central player having already been capped three times by the national side.
