EL CLÁSICO

The most international El Clásico

Several nationalities have contributed in the classic match between Real Madrid and Barcelona, but which one has scored the most goals in El Clásico?

Real Madrid and Barcelona face off in another El Clásico today at the Bernabeu in the Copa del Rey semifinal with kickoff at 9 p.m. local time (3 p.m. ET).

The international El Clásico

Though El Clásico’s are always the biggest dates on the Spanish soccer calendar, the match between Barcelona and Real Madrid, the rivalry, and the excitement is celebrated across the globe. Even the teams themselves are quite international in the 21st century.

Spain has scored the most goals in the match with a total of 54. Behind them is Argentina with 33, Brazil with 26, France with 25, and Portugal with 21. The country responsible for the most goals scored in a Clásico, though, is Argentina. Lionel Messi’s 26 goals are the most scored in El Clásico history.

Cristiano Ronaldo is second for Portugal with 18, followed by France’s Karim Benzema with 13. Ronaldo is the only player to have scored in extra time in a Copa de Rey final between Real Madrid and Barcelona. Benzema has managed to score in the first minute (LaLiga 2011) and in the last minute (Supercopa 2022-23) of an El Clásico. Behind Benzema is Spain’s Raúl. González with six, and Brazil’s Ronaldinho with five. Vinicius Junior will likely catch up to Ronaldinho without an issue as the 19-year-old already has two goals against Barcelona, the youngest international player to score in El Clásico. González was scoring goals for nearly 13 years, with 4,604 days between his first El Clásico goal and his last.
