The reason behind Liga MX decision to reshuffled its schedule

Club América will kick off week 2 of the Apertura 2025 Liga MX season earlier than expected. Unlike previous years, Mexican football’s second matchday begins on Wednesday, July 16, even though it’s not part of a double fixture week – a move that has left many fans wondering what’s behind the early start.

The explanation is simple. The Campeón de Campeones match, which determines the top team of the season, is set to take place Sunday, July 20, in the United States. América will face Toluca, which prompted the league to move both teams’ regular week 2 matches forward to make room for the final.

As a result, América will host Xolos de Tijuana at Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes to open the round. The home side heads into the game under pressure, having only drawn in their opening match, while the visitors started strong with a 3-1 win at home.

Meanwhile, Toluca – the reigning Liga MX champions – will also play on Wednesday, traveling to face Santos Laguna in Torreón. Though Toluca already secured three points in their opening game, they’ll be aiming for another win to avoid slipping in the standings.

In total, three matches were rescheduled to accommodate the final: América vs Tijuana, Santos vs Toluca, and Atlético de San Luis vs Monterrey. That leaves only one game on Sunday, July 20: Pumas vs Pachuca, set for noon at Estadio Olímpico Universitario. Later that same day, at 5:30 p.m. ET, América and Toluca will battle for the Campeón de Campeones title.

This reshuffling makes for a rare week in Liga MX, with the second round of the tournament starting midweek and stretching over five days, as Pachuca also looks to hold onto the top spot in the standings.
