The reason Real Madrid were allowed to make six substitutions against Elche
A rarely-applied regulation gave Los Blancos the chance to field six players from their youth squad in the 4-1 win.

Real Madrid capped off a tremendous week, which included a 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, with a convincing 4-1 win against Elche at the Bernabéu. The result moves Álvaro Arbeloa’s team to within a point of LaLiga leaders Barcelona, who still have a game in hand.
Six youth players take the field thanks to rare sixth substitution
One of the underlying stories of the match was the number of youth-team players Madrid were able to field. Six youngsters featured at different points, made possible by an exceptional rule allowing a sixth substitution.

The unusual situation arose after a clash of heads in the 23rd minute between Eduardo Camavinga and Elche’s Adrià Pedrosa. Pedrosa was unable to continue and had to be replaced.
IFAB rules state that when a player is substituted for a suspected concussion, the affected team is allowed an extra substitution. The same courtesy is also extended to the opposing team, even if none of their players were potentially injured.
Youngsters get their chance
Madrid made all six substitutions between the 58th and 64th minutes. Daniel Yáñez, Diego Aguado, Manuel Ángel, and César Palacios came on alongside Arda Güler and Gonzalo García, the latter two with considerably more first-team experience.
The result not only boosted Madrid’s league position but also gave fans a glimpse of the club’s next generation stepping up in a big game.
