The reason why Efraín Álvarez chose Chivas over Club América
Speaking while on international duty with Mexico, Álvarez discussed the reasons behind his decision to join Chivas over América.
Efraín Álvarez was one of the standout players for Tijuana in recent Liga MX tournaments, contributing with goals and assists for Los Xolos. His impressive performances caught the attention of both Club América and Chivas Guadalajara, who battled it out for his signing ahead of the Apertura 2025.
And it was Chivas who finally won the race for Álvarez’s signature. Late last month, the 12-time Mexican champions announced the 22-year-old’s signing, having lured the former Los Angeles Galaxy player to Estadio Akron on a reported four-year contract.
Efraín explains Chivas choice
Currently, Álvarez is focused on the Mexican national team as they prepare for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which gets underway next week. While on international duty, however, he took the time to discuss his move to Chivas - and made it clear what motivated him to don the red and white jersey.
“Now I’m at Chivas I’m very happy, I have to say,” Álvarez declared. “I’m eager to be there. At the end of the day, I felt in my heart that I wanted to go to Chivas, so that’s what happened.”
Mexicans going for Gold
Álvarez will spend most of the summer with El Tri under the guidance of Javier Aguirre, as the Mexicans attempt to retain their the Gold Cup title. Drawn in a first-round group with Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and Suriname, the nine-time tournament winners kick off their campaign against the Dominicans on June 14.
Once the national team’s participation in the Gold Cup concludes, the forward will report for Chivas preseason training, under new head coach Gabriel Milito.
