CONCACAF NATIONS LEAGUE
The USMNT could face Mexico earlier than expected
If the United States men’s national team defeats El Salvador on Monday night, their upcoming opponent could be Mexico in the semifinals.
CONCACAF dreams about the a Nations League final between Mexico and the United States. The last time they met in the most important game of the campaign was back in the summer of 2021, when the USMNT defeated El Tri in overtime, with Christian Pulisic scoring a penalty kick in the 114th minute to win the inaugural edition of the tournament.
Mexico wants revenge
It was looking like both sides were going to meet once again in the final of the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League, but things could change due to the latest results. Mexico and Jamaica tied 2-2 at Estadio Azteca over the weekend and with that result they have secured the last spot in the Final Four of the tournament. This means that if the United States men’s national team defeats El Salvador on Monday night at the Exploria Stadium, they will get the top seed in the Final Four and will play Mexico in the semifinal. A win would see the USMNT will reach 10 points, but there are two ways that they could avoid Mexico in the next round.
If the United States ties El Salvador and either Panama or Canada win their respective matches, the USMNT would avoid Mexico in the semifinal. Also, if El Salvador defeated the Americans on Monday night, then it would be them who will advance to the Final Four so there is a lot in stake in this match-up.
