Update:

Later this month the iconic Azteca Stadium (which is actually now called the Banorte Stadium due to sponsorship) will open its doors to fans for the first time since mid 2024 as Mexico face Portugal in a friendly match.

The “Coloso de Santa Úrsula” as the ground is known is in a “race against time” to complete the final stages of a three-phase renovation plan costing approximately $150–180 million and the old Azteca will host five games during the 2026 World Cup.

The investment has seen a new hybrid pitch with advanced ventilation and suction drainage systems to handle Mexico City’s heavy rains laid

All 82,000 have been replaced and a new modern Wi-Fi 6 system as well as a new sound system with over 250 speakers, and 2,000 square meters of external LED screens installed.

Hospitality has also seen activity with extensive upgrades to luxury boxes, press areas, and the creation of new food courts and commercial zones (bars/restaurants).

Portugal to star in high profile friendly

A “soft reopening” is scheduled for March 28, 2026, for a friendly match between Mexico and Portugal as the final touches are being completed on luxury boxes, hospitality areas, and external aesthetic finishes.

Stadium owner Emilio Azcárraga Jean has confirmed that while the stadium will be fully functional for the June 11 opener, some non-essential works (like the full parking lot development and certain external “structural aesthetics”) will be finished after the tournament.

FIFA is expected to take full control of the venue in early May 2026 for final logistical and security preparations with Liga MX teams Club America and Cruz Azul to continue using the stadium for home games in the future.
