The biggest rivalry in CONCACAF is set for a new chapter. Mexico and the United States have come face-to-face many times over the years and in June they will meet for the first time in the Nations League semi-finals.

The two nations will be joined by Panama and Canada in the Final Four, which will be played at Allegiant stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada between Thursday 15 and Sunday 18 June.

2023 CONCACAF Nations League Final Four

Semi-finals: 15 June 2023

  • Panama vs. Canada
  • United States vs. Mexico

Final and match for third place: 18 June 2023

Both Mexico and the USMNT brought in new coaches after the Qatar World Cup. Diego Cocca was appointed to take charge of El Tri in February, taking over from Tata Martino while Anthony Hudson took the reins of the USMNT on an interim basis back in January when Gregg Berhalter’s contract was up.

The two CONCACAF powerhouses will be gunning for victory in a match that is bound to attract great media attention and cause huge expectation among both sets of fans. Mexico come out on top in the overall head-to-head figures but have lost much of that dominance over the past two decades. In the 76 previous meetings between Mexico and the USMNT, El Tri have won 38, the USA have won 23 and 15 have ended level. However, Mexico’s last victory, in official competition, was back in July 2019 - so June’s semi-final represents a great opportunity to end a four-game streak without beating the United States.

The last five games between Mexico and the United States

  • Mexico 1-0 United States - Gold Cup 2019
  • United States 3-2 Mexico - Concacaf Nations League 2021
  • Mexico 0-1 United States - Gold Cup 2021
  • United States 2-0 Mexico - Qatar 2022 Qualifiers
  • Mexico 0-0 United States - Qualifying Qatar 2022

Canada and Panama are the other Nations League semi-finalists. Canada team thrashed Honduras to secure their place at the CNL for the first time while the Canaleros just beat Costa Rica in San José, José Fajardo hitting the only goal of the game to ensure Thomas Christiansen finished top of Group B in League A.
