The Mexican league asked fans to vote for the team of the month in July - and the winner has raised more than a few eyebrows.
Liga MX’s social media strategy has long focused on fan engagement, aiming to make supporters feel like an integral part of Mexican soccer.
But in doing so, it’s also revealed a more sentimental, less objective side when it comes to evaluating performance - one that favors passion over metrics.
Liga MX’s team of the month?!
It’s not the fault of loyal fans, who simply express their love for their club’s colors. Still, the recent poll naming Cruz Azul as Liga MX’s team of the month is a tough pill to swallow - especially given La Máquina’s recent form.
How did Cruz Azul actually perform last month?
In a social media post, Liga MX announced that fans had voted Cruz Azul as July’s top team. While the recognition speaks volumes about the reach and devotion of the club’s fanbase, it’s hard to argue that the team’s on-field results justify the accolade - either in domestic play or in the binational Leagues Cup.
Liga MX Apertura 2025:
- Cruz Azul 0–0 Mazatlán
- Atlas 3–3 Cruz Azul
- Cruz Azul 4–1 León
Leagues Cup:
- Seattle Sounders 7–0 Cruz Azul
While it’s true that Leagues Cup results shouldn’t directly influence voting for Liga MX honors, conceding seven goals in a single match is hard to ignore. It casts a long shadow over the idea that Cruz Azul is currently the league’s standout team.
As it stands, Los Celeste are all but eliminated from the Leagues Cup - a tournament shared with MLS teams - and criticism has been mounting over their recent performances.
Add to that the ongoing drama surrounding Iván Alonso and Giorgios Giakoumakis, and it’s clear that Cruz Azul is enjoying anything but smooth sailing.
