Tigres boss Diego Cocca a contender to become Mexico head coach
Reports from Mexico claim Tigres manager Diego Cocca has already held talks over becoming the new Mexican national team coach.
Marcelo Bielsa, Miguel Herrera, Guillermo Almada, Jaime Lozano. Now a new name has entered the conversation to become the new head coach of the Mexican national team: Tigres boss Diego Cocca.
According to Mexican journalist David Medrano, Cocca has already met with Rodrigo Ares de Parga, the new sporting director for the different Mexico national teams, to have preliminary discussions about the post. Tigres owners Cemex are not on the newly-created Comité de Selecciones Nacionales (National Teams Committee), which is made up of presidents of several Liga MX clubs who will have a big say in decisions made related to El Tri.
How long has Diego Cocca been Tigres manager?
Cocca’s success with Guadalajara-based Atlas, with whom he won the Apertura 2021 and Clausura 2022, led to Tigres appointing him as successor to the aforementioned Herrera in November last year. The Clausura 2023 will be the Argentine’s first tournament at the helm but if he does ultimately take over the reigns at El Tri in the next few days, he will have spent less than three months at the club.
Tigres didn’t mess around in the winter transfer window, spending big money on players such as Diego Lainez, Fernando Gorriarán and Nico Ibáñez to ensure that Cocca has a roster at his disposal which should be capable of challenging for the title.
André-Pierre Gignac signs Tigres contract extension
There has been good news for Tigres on Friday in that the club’s all-time record goalscorer André-Pierre Gignac has signed a two-year extension to his contract which will keep him in San Nicolás de los Garza until 2025. However, that has been tempered somewhat by the revelation that Cocca could only stay for a matter of days.
