Pachuca head coach Guillermo Almada goes into his third consecutive Liga MX final and will be hoping it’s a case of ‘third time lucky’ after his Santos Laguna side fell to Atlas in the 2021 Apertura. The Uruguayan then moved to the Pachuca bench and once again Atlas were their undoing in the Clausura 2022. The 56-year-old will, however be inspired by his sides performance at the Estadio Nemesio Diez during the regular season where his men outmuscled Toluca running out 1-4 winners in their meeting in August.

A fascinating first-leg encounter awaits at ‘La Bombonera’ on Thursday night in the first installment of the two-legged final.

Toluca are on a solid run since their away defeat to Tigres in early September and having finished sixth in the regular season were forced to participate in the repechaje/wild-card round where they saw off Juarez with a solid 3-0 win. A wild 6-4 semi-final aggregate win over Santos Laguna set up the semi-final clash against ‘Las Aguilas’ and a narrow 3-2 win with many ‘azulcremas’ fans still lamenting the disallowed Henry Martin goal which VAR overruled with the striker millimetres in an offside position.

Toluca have won the Mexican title 10 times, putting the team third on the all-time rankings, behind only América (13) and Guadalajara (12). Some would point to the clubs more than 100 years of history to build upon, but Toluca’s professional team began in 1950. That said, they’ve been involved in a total of 17 league finals.

‘Los Tuzos’ have had to overcome the Monterrey giants in Tigres UANL and ‘Los Rayados’ on their path to the final and will point to their solid defense that were able to keep Monterrey at bay last Sunday and make good their first leg 5-2 advantage.
