Toluca will play the 14th final in their history when they face Los Tuzos of Pachuca for the Apertura 2022 title. With official schedules still to be finalised, the first leg of the final series will be played on Wednesday 26 October at Toluca’s Estadio Nemesio Diez and the trophy will be awarded on Sunday 29 October at the Estadio Hidalgo.
One discouraging fact that could complicate things for the Red Devils is that they have been unable to take advantage of home advantage in finals on their own turf and in front of their own fans. The last time there was a Choricero triumph at home was in the 2002 Apertura Final, 20 years ago, when they beat Morelia 4-1.
Apertura 2005 vs Monterrey
The first leg was played at the Bombonera and the game ended 3-3, but in the second leg Toluca won the title by beating Los Rayados 3-0 at the demolished Estadio Tecnológico.
Apertura 2006 vs Chivas
The second leg played at the Nemesio Diez was a 2-1 defeat against the Rebaño, and as the first leg had been a 1-1 draw, the championship stayed in Guadalajara.
Apertura 2008 vs Cruz Azul
The first leg was played at the old Estadio Azul, with the Choriceros winning 2-0, and for the second leg the result was the same but in reverse, with La Máquina winning. However, Toluca were crowned champions on penalties.
Bicentenario 2010 vs Santos
Again, the second leg at home was a goalless draw, and with the first leg in Torreon ending 2-2, Toluca were crowned champions after penalties.
Apertura 2012 vs Tijuana
The first leg went in Tijuana’s favour (2-1), and they recorded a 2-0 win in the second leg to defeat Toluca.
Clausura 2018 vs Santos
The last final that Toluca played. They lost the first leg 2-1 and drew the second leg 1-1 at home.
