Toluca’s dream run continues as Diablos Rojos book another final with win over León
Toluca will play its sixth final in the past 18 months as it chases a fourth international title after Pereira and Viñas tamed a toothless León.

Toluca refuses to let its renaissance end.
The Diablos Rojos, one of North America’s hottest teams since the start of 2025, have already conquered Mexico. Now they’re determined to extend that dominance beyond their own borders. On Thursday night in Houston, they took another step.
León had moments of promise and plenty of firepower up front, but Toluca had what mattered most: the finishing touch. For the club from Metepec, reaching finals has become an awfully good habit.
This time, it’s in the Leagues Cup.
A breakthrough before halftime
Both teams came within inches of breaking the deadlock during an entertaining opening 15 minutes. Arcila and Federico Viñas each had chances slip away before Helinho nearly gave Toluca the lead just before halftime, pouncing on a loose ball in the middle of the box and firing left-footed. Goalkeeper Óscar García reacted quickly to smother the danger.
Toluca controlled possession for long stretches after that, but León continued to threaten. Diber Cambindo tested García with a powerful strike, while Guevara’s header served as another warning.
Viñas came even closer, although his awkward header sailed so far off target it landed closer to Houston’s Toyota Center than the goal itself.
The breakthrough finally arrived when Everardo López’s long-range effort spilled loose in a crowded penalty area. Federico Pereira reacted first, slicing home the rebound to give Toluca a deserved lead.

Viñas honors soccer’s oldest rule
León had no choice but to push forward.
Eduardo Gandolfi moved his team higher up the field, but Toluca refused to abandon its attacking fullbacks, trusting the security of Antonio Mohamed’s back five.
Juan Pablo Domínguez fired just over as León’s pressure mounted. Rodríguez and Colula repeatedly found space down the left flank, forcing Toluca into a deep defensive shell with nine players packed inside their own penalty area.
Then came the moment that ended the contest.
Another interception by Franco Romero launched a devastating counterattack. Viñas carried the ball forward, combined with Díaz Price, and the Uruguayan calmly finished despite García getting a hand to it.
Facing his former club, Viñas immediately raised his hands in apology after scoring, honoring soccer’s unwritten rule of respect for an old team.

One step away from another trophy
León’s comeback hopes disappeared when Romaña was sent off after picking up a second yellow card.
With the extra man, Toluca settled into complete control. Even Helinho, quieter than usual, had the confidence to try an audacious rabona in search of the top corner.
Mohamed refreshed his squad but kept Viñas and Díaz Price on the field, and both continued tormenting García. Díaz Price came within inches of an unforgettable goal when his bizarre effort struck the post with the goalkeeper beaten and the net wide open, a miss that drew more laughter than frustration.
Thursday’s job was finished.
On Sunday, with another trophy waiting on the field, Toluca knows those chances will have to count.
