Toluca’s red‑hot dynasty chases Concacaf glory under Antonio Mohamed
While the Concacaf Champions League title isn’t among his achievements, the ‘Turk’ has already tasted victory outside of domestic competition.
Toluca are living a true golden era in San Bernardino. The Diablos Rojos — already back‑to‑back Liga MX champions and still fighting for a historic three‑peat — have now punched their ticket to the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup Final, aiming to extend their dominance beyond Mexico’s borders.
At the center of it all is Antonio Mohamed, the architect of this powerhouse. Despite his long résumé, this will be the first Concacaf final he has ever coached, even though he led Monterrey at the 2019 Club World Cup (a spot earned earlier by Diego Alonso).
But Mohamed is no stranger to international success. His coaching career took a major turn in the 2009–10 season, when he lifted one of CONMEBOL’s most prestigious trophies.
Mohamed’s Sudamericana breakthrough
After a stint with Colón in Argentina, Mohamed took over Independiente in October 2010 — mid‑season, mid‑competition, and already trailing in their Copa Sudamericana Round of 16 tie. The coaching change was made precisely because the team had fallen behind after the first leg.
Mohamed’s Independiente rallied to eliminate Defensor Sporting, then advanced past Deportes Tolima on away goals, and later knocked out LDU Quito to reach the final against Brazil’s Goiás.
The final became legendary:
- Lost the first leg 2–0
- Won the second leg 3–1 at home
- Clinched the title in a dramatic penalty shootout
It was the first major trophy of Mohamed’s managerial career — and a defining moment.
Toluca now aims for continental supremacy
With Toluca, Mohamed is chasing the one international title missing from his time in Mexico. Winning the Concacaf Champions Cup would secure:
- A spot in the next FIFA Club World Cup
- A berth in the Intercontinental Cup this December
Two of the biggest global stages any club can reach today.
Toluca’s dynasty is already historic. A continental crown would make it unforgettable.
