Thomas Tuchel’s track record: how many trophies has he won as a coach?

The English FA have decided to move quickly in their search for a permanent coach to replace Lee Carsley who has occupied the role on an interim basis since Gareth Southgate stepped down back in August after the team’s defeat to Spain in Euro 2024 final. It emerged today that Thomas Tuchel has agreed to take on the role as new England manager.

The FA is expected to officially announce Tuchel’s appointment at a press conference at Wembley on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. local time (8:30 a.m. ET / 5:30 a.m. PT).

The 51-year-old is a highly-respected and successful coach with vast experience of coaching at some of Europe’s top clubs. However, this will be his first taste of management at international level. That shouldn’t be too much of a problem though for Tuchel, who speaks several languages - including English, fluently. Tuchel won’t be the first non-English coach to take the reins of the national team - Swedish coach Sven-Göran Eriksson (2001–06) and Italian Fabio Capello (2008–12) both had lengthy spells in charge of the Three Lions.

In fact, his biggest successes as a coach were gained outside of his native Germany during fruitful years at Paris Saint-Germain from 2018–20 then Chelsea from 2021–22. Tuchel built his reputation in the Bundesliga at Borussia Dortmund, where he was tasked with succeeding Jürgen Klopp.

During his two years at Signal Iduna Park, he managed to post better figures than his predecessor (a 62.62 per cent win rate compared to Klopp’s 56.43), guide the team to end as Bundesliga runners-up in his first season and deliver the DFB-Pokal in his second, with a 1-2 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the final and goals from Dembélé and Aubameyang. It was the first major trophy of his coaching career.

Despite that, he had a strained relationship with management at Dortmund which was partly the reason why the club decided to release him in May 2017. After taking a year out, he accepted a two-year contract with PSG, where he would enjoy the most productive spell of his career so far in terms of silverware.

His team won a clean sweep of domestic trophies, including back-to-back Ligue 1 titles but success was much harder to come by in the Champions League. Tuchel’s troops were eliminated by Manchester United in the Last 16 during his first season at the helm but reached the final the following year, during the Covid-19 pandemic, only to lose by the minimum to Bayern.

Just a few months later, in December 2020, he was unceremoniously sacked only to be immediately offered a job by Chelsea. At Stamford Bridge, Tuchel reached the pinnacle of his career so far. In his first year, his team won the Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup.

The Blues went into the Champions League final as the underdogs but Kai Havertz’s first-half strike was enough to beat Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and deliver the club’s second European crown.

But behind the scenes, the situation was growing increasing turbulent with the manager disagreeing with many of the board’s decisions. He was dismissed in September 2022 following three straight defeats in the Premier League.

The German coach wasn’t out of work for long and in March 2023, signed another short-term contract back home with Bundesliga giants Bayern. His team clinched the league title in dramatic fashion, on the final day of the competition, finishing level on 71 points with his old club Dortmund but with a better goal difference. Tuchel picked up his 10th winners medal and claimed his third domestic league title.
